So all new cards issued will be the MasterCard version?
No, it seems they’re still issuing Visa cards for new customers. Opened a new everyday current account 2 weeks ago. Received a new visa debit card in the post. Asked for a replacement debit MasterCard, only to be sent another Visa card!! Called them up again and it seems this time they’ve sent the correct MasterCard, as it’s showing up as a debit MasterCard in their app now.

Why the desperation for a debit Mastercard over a Visa Debit?

Because the 'freeze and manage' card settings in the Santander app aren't available for a visa debit card. Only for a debit (or credit) mastercard. Otherwise I wouldn't be too fussed and would have kept the Visa debit card.
I now have Mastercard, but not impressed that, despite using cashpoints, I am having to enter a PIN for refused contactless payments far more often than I ever did for the Visa debit card.
