Well I think this just about sums up what New Labour has done for this country.Despite its socialist(joke) principals the last 10 years has created an appalling gap between rich and poor.
socialisim always breeds inequality it creates a governing class who through corruption and luck end up with money and perks while reducing the majority to the lowest common denominator.
posibly the worst thing about labor is they have basicly enabled the government to do the oposite of what people wanted, i seriouly doubt any tory government would have been able to get uni tuition fees passed (i think most people would prefer that to a billion £ tent). the most right wing people would probably be best voting labour, next term the will probably privatise the nhs (a good thing imho)0 -

I'm in Cardiff. I bet that Cardiff and Nottingham are not the only cities in this position either. I wouldn't be at all surprised if similar situations exists in Sheffield, Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, etc, etc.0 -

It exists massively in Leeds (where I'm originally from, or nearly). The centre is so full of one-bed and two-bed new builds that the rich students can afford them. Some of the traditional student areas are relatively deserted, or inhabited by people who only have a certain amount of money. You can't put their rent up if they physically haven't got any more money!Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -
Just a personal anecdote but my old neighbour who moved out a couple of months ago has been unable to sell his old house ... I notice that it's now sporting a 'To Let' instead of 'For Sale' sign (I imagine you could buy if you were inclined, but nobody has been).
I've also heard from others who have seen this happen in their areas too.
I'd guess that we are set for a period of turbulence in the rental market but I'm no longer so sure that it will mean appreciably rising rents. It all boils down to supply and demand plus how much people can afford. Levels of price inflation and wage inflation will play a part in the 'afford' part of the equation.--
