    Because it's just as much a techie question as it is a mobiles question and that forum is mainly used to discuss mobile phone providers, deals etc.

    Make sure apps can only update over wifi and not over mobile data

    On my version of android its settings/data usage then a 'switch' at the top for Mobile Data.

    Wouldn't make much of a difference if mobile data is switched off.

    Is it sending long texts, gifs or photos as MSM? That would cost more.

    I have now discovered that resetting my phone caused the data connection to default to "on". Now turned off and all's well. Thank you to those who made helpful suggestions.

    So you didn't consider it relevant to inform the board that you had reset your phone before posting? If you'd posted you'd done that somebody would probably picked up on the fact that data is on by default and you wouldn't have had a wave of unhelpful posts.

    Well I had to phone virgin to get data switched off (payg) even thoug it was switc hed off in settings. Please dont post this is not possible, because I know it is.

    Really? If data is switched off it is off. Isn't it?
