Meg Just wondered how you got on with the 50p a day challenge? Assume you've finished it now!

Ditto. I'm also wondering how you got on. What did you eat?

30p/bar in Aldi/Lidl. Two slices of bread with a bar of chocolate melted in the middle = main meal of the day.
You also need nutrients in those calories.

Cocoa is loaded with micronutrients. Wholegrain bread is decent too. But you won't get much of either for 50p.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

I just hope the OP does get back to us and tell us how she did
I still can not believe that you can eat healthily on 50p a day unless you are "buying" from what's already in the house0 -
I think if you 'costed' it out from what you already have indoors its just about doable ,but only just about .Left over meat can be turned into a decent pastie with a bit of effort. or at a pinch Tescos 2 for a quid pasties could be bought and used with some veg to make a meal .I cook a lot of HM soup which I normally have for lunch with crackers and soft cheese so for example I can make 6-8 portions of hearty soup for around 50p from Y/S veg a carton of soft cheese is around 49p from aldies and a packet of crackers also around 50p so for say £1.50 I can sort out a weeks lunches.Breakfasts would be oats made with water and a splash of milk and a sprinkle of salt for aroundsay 50 for the week,so thats £2.00 Dinners would leave me with £1.50 Hmm a bit more difficult probably as much veg as I could get for around 75p and then it would be veggie curry, veggie chilli basically using the veg instead of the meat .but virtually no fruit at all,Rice would probably replace potatoes so not very healthy and certainly not sustainable for too long but if its for a week you won't starve ,probably just be very bored with the diet, but if its a good cause and brings home how some people do live on very little.
Sadly millions of folk live like this not through choice but as a necessity especially in the third world0 -

There is no way you can consistently meet all of the official healthy eating guidelines on 50p a day, without regular yellow sticker 'luck' and/ or bulk wholefoods from stocks at home and/ or a freezer and/ or budgeting for transport.
Eat a really wide variety of different foods, three dairy servings a day and most grains being wholegrains come to mind as particular challenges. The public tends to focus on fruit and veg, but that is not more important than the other guidelines.
If you had access to Asian/ Arabic grocers or a good World Foods aisle at the supermarket you could get wholegrain flours/ brown rice/ dry pulses in large bags and sacks, as well as cooking oils and fats/ onions/ canned tomatoes/ raisins/ sultanas all in bulk.
So vegan pulse dishes with wholegrain flatbreads or wholemeal sourdough bread would feature regularly. Many of the the traditional Western filling/ budget dishes are a poor fit with the official healthy eating guidelines.
Hope my thoughts are helpful to someone.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
