Is that literally 50p a day or can you make use of stuff you already have in stock? That level is lower than the Live Below the Line challenge.

Good luck to you but I won't be joining you!

Have just thought of the Thrifty Lesley website. She has loads of recipes where she feeds herself and OH on £1 a day. There might be some recipes you could make use of Meg.

Also worth checking out the Jack Monroe website too - cookingonabootstrap.

I can't think how this doable Meg unless you can use some stuff you already have, have a really good source of 10p RTC/YS or live on porridge and lentils & rice all week based on 1kg oats (75p), 1kg red lentils (£1.80), and 2kg long grain rice (90p) - all based on Tesco prices and you can snaffle some free salt for seasoning to make it palatable!
    Good luck

I agree Thrifty Lesleys and Jack Monroes site are good sources of cheap recipes . I recall Jack struggled with Live below the Line . Healthwise it very much depends if you're aiming for a short challenge or longer . With rising prices and whether pulses , veg etc are cheaply and easily sourced I don't think it's sustainable for any length of time .

If it was simply a 'challenge' for a day or so...maybe sponsored with money donated to a charity that feeds the genuinely hungry….then yes, it is possible to eat for 50p a day.

However, as has already been mentioned, it would NOT be advisable to do this long term.

Breakfast - porridge oats.....lunch - veggie soup....dinner - lentil curry....would at least have a chance of filling you up.

I HAVE lived below the poverty line in the past - and for far longer than I ever thought I would manage! (I only survived thanks to food hand-outs)...it was not by choice....I wouldn't willingly go through that again!

    I could do it. But I won't.

Beans on toast = 12p. Chips and mushy peas are 23p.

I'd just eat what I already mostly eat, but cut back further and have no choccy biscuits (currently eating one as I type).

I'd eat lots of jacket spud/bean means.... and rice and spaghetti. Spaghetti/bean bolognaise, veg curries. And a few giant yorkshires tossed in for fun.

Omelette and chips, with/without beans is another.

But, as I don't "need to".... I'll not join you.

During the Credit Crunch, I reckon I was on about £1 a day. That is for everything including condiments etc. and without using anything home-grown or free.

I did it by eating very little meat, cheap vegetables and only own brand food from the supermarket and no shopping from corner shops.

Nowadays food is more expensive, so it would be a struggle to even do £1 a day. You probably would struggle getting cheap fresh vegetables which were my staple diet while I was in my £1 a day regime. Potatoes especially have shot up in price (onions are cheaper than potatoes in my local Tesco's). You would have to eat foods like own brand rice, biscuits, tinned beans, all of which are still fairly inexpensive. Eggs are also still quite inexpensive so that could be a staple.
