Jackie, I kind of know the feeling. I was unemployed for a few months [about 25 years ago] and while I was unemployed I used to buy some pasta, some tinned tomatoes [ they were very cheap at the time] and a few onions, and I lived on pasta and tomato sauce for a while. No breakfasts, and the same thing for dinner and supper. I was very pleased to see cheese on the menu when I started working again....

One of my granddaughters is a primary teacher and she always can spot the hungry children in her class, and bless her she makes sure there is always a tin with biscuits in, and will say to the ones who come to school with very small lunch boxes 'oh help yourself to some biscuits I am trying to what my weight ,or 'better help use these up before they go soft' .Most of the teachers in her school do this as well

One of my sisters works with a primary school and they provide a basic breakfast, a slice of toast or cereal for the same reason. Not just because hungry children aren't acceptable but because they also learn better if they're not hungry. The other growing problem is school holidays food poverty for parents who rely on free school meals to give children one 'decent' meal a day.

I remember giving dd at university several boxes of tomato and chicken and vegetable soup in cans so she always had something to eat. One day years ago a friend of hers called round on a really cold and snowy day and with tonsillitis . He was a bit surprised when I insisted he come in and wait and had a hot drink and a bite to eat. When he asked if I had the soup dd had at uni and I opened a cupboard with lots of it , he was even more surprised. The can of soup and some bread and butter not only filled him up but did not hurt his throat.

I used to have several recipes for when we were skint and DH used to ask "Are we economising?" "Er why?" "We are eating better!" Which meant I was making home made soups stews, bread and rolls and pastry or pancake dishes.
