I'd say it will only effect 20% of items sold unless you are selling brand new items all the time? Most of the items I sell are not sold by Amazon anyway, but it will hit sales.

My sales have dropped this week noticably. Up until this week I was selling 15-20 per day, now I'm lucky to push past 10.

    Hi guys,
I'm trying the whole Amazon Marketplace thing for the first time, so I've been having a look at as many of the old posts as I can. Some great tips, especially about things I wouldn't have even thought about!

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it up after I've gotten rid of all the unwanted books that have been lurking under my bed for the past year, but it sounds like the bug bites pretty quickly once you get started, so who knows? ;)

Hopefully I won't have too many problems. If I do, I'll run screaming to the thread to help me along! :rotfl:

    Welcome!

You will find you'll sell a few of your own and then next time you are in a charity shop you'll just browse the books 'in case' and then before you know it you'l be looking for local auctions and sellers of bulk books and your car will never fit in the garage again.

It gets to you. I can barely move in my hous enow for books, piles of them waiting to be sorted, piles waiting to go to a charity fair, piles of them to be stored. The man who came to read th emeter last week took a few of the charity ones and th eman who fixed my washing machine took away two large boxes for himself! No one ever visits me now without taking away a few books as it saves me dozens of trips to the charity shop.

Okay, don't rub it in, :rotfl: OH is still fed up with me as we didn't get our car in the garage at all last winter. I've just about cleared it by getting rid of the tat at boot fairs - but at the last boot fair I bumped into my 'little man' who has 1000 books he will let me have for £60. Do you think OH will notice if I sneak them in????

  • Thanks for the welcome!

I'm kind of worried about this £5 super saver now - I guess I pick a bad time to start selling!

I was wondering if anyone knew how well old copies of the Guinness Book of Records do on Amazon? I found a pile of them under my bed (and God, they were heavy) - are they worth bothering about, as the P&P will be expensive...?

I have never ever done anything other than jink Guinness book of records, even the local charity shop is reluctant to take them. However, sometimes other people manage to sell the strangest things, have you checked them out on Amazon yet both price wise and ranking wise?

I would, but I put them back under the bed, and really can't be bothered lifting the bed up again to get at them! :p The older books (1950s, '60s, etc.) seem to do better than the recent ones, but I guess it depends how much it would cost to post them.

  • I took some Guinness Books of Records to the Boot Fair last week, the only person that looked at them were DS and that was only to pass the time - the funniest one he read out was the person with the longest ear hair - yuk

You can post 2kg as a standard parcel for £4.20 or 4kg for £8.85, so if they go for more than £8 or so (before Amazon fees) it might be possible to turn a profit.

  • Hi!

I sold books and CDs on Amazon a couple of years ago but my job and my illness got in the way. Now I'm better and working part time, I decided to start selling again. I went to my seller account and found I was still on holiday settings, clicked to reopen the listings and there they all were (well, about 30 items), just as I'd left them over two years ago. Mind you, I couldn't find all the actual items so had to start again from scratch. D'oh!

I've done ok with sales, sold twelve books in a fortnight but most of them have been in the 1p to 20p mark - though I did sell an out of print paperback in a frankly tatty condition for £5.99, which I really didn't expect. I only have 40 items listed at the moment so I'm pleased with the sales.

I have hundreds of my own books to sell but I think a lot of them will be 1p items so I'm considering pro merchant status. Buying stock to sell sounds a bit scary for now, though I do have the space to keep stock in my house.

My amazon sales ID is my own name and if I sell more, I'd quite like to change that to sound a bit more professional, is that possible?
