If you want to improve driver safety then get all cars to block mobile phone signals, got to be easier that this GPS speed system
+1
And use technology to enforce people NOT sitting 6 inches off the bumper of the car in front
Both are a lot easier than trying to get the car to read speed limit signs0 -
As Mr Clarkson once said, replace the seat belt and airbag with a large spike in the centre of the steering wheel and people will drive a lot slower and with more care.

So passengers shouldn't be allowed to use their phones? I won't use my phone at all when driving even with car kit. My phone is not paired with my car and it is always on silent.0 -

Far from easy, far from practical and could cause many more problems that in solves.
The only ways to totally prevent a hand held phone from working inside a vehicle are to either have the car body acting as a shield (a Faraday cage), which would also require all of the windows to also be shielded or to use a jammer.
If the first option was to be used, how would it work on convertibles? and what would stop someone simply winding a window down?
As for a jammer. Not only would it affect people nearby, it would also prevent someone in the vehicle from calling the emergency services should the need arise whilst the system is active.0 -

I think this is a bit of a non story to be honest, if the system can be turned off it'll just be another gimmick they can flog in new cars.
If the system was to be ever been enforced as permanently on, I can't see much of an issue on local roads but I believe it will probably make high speed routes like motorways less safe. What you will get is the vast majority of drivers on the motorway with their foot planted to the floor trying to do the maximum possible speed, slight differences in the accuracy of different cars speedos will then result in traffic bunching and people tailgating in frustration at the car in front apparently only doing 69mph. Rightly or wrongly, this is exactly what goes on with HGVs that are limited and why we see all the elephant racing. There are just as many bonehead car drivers as there are bonehead HGV drivers who will get sucked into obsessing over 1mph.
Our major routes run better with everybody just cracking on as they please.0 -
Inclined to agree. In the USA where mostly you can overtake in any lane I never saw one case of 'lane attitude' or 'lane rage'. People just crack on. While one gets rather a lot of it in the UK. With speed limiting, will we start to see a lot of '1mph rage'?0
