Speed limiters mandatory in new cars from 2022

There may be some drivers who'll just plant their foot and let the limited deal with it, but they are the ones going at inappropriate speeds anyway. Most drivers will still pay some minimal level of attention to their conditions.0

i recently got a car with that kind of system
it has a camera which scan the speed limit sign and show it on dash board.
And it make beeping sounds when you go over certain speed limit.
However, I turn this off at the end because it pick up wrong speed limit sign in some occasion.
What happened was I was driving on main road which is 40, the system pick up 30 sign at the entrance of parallel side road
And today, I was driving on a road change from 50 to national speed limit on roundabout then join motorway.
For an unknown reason, the system missed the national speed limit sign. i can't imagine how would I able to joint motorway if the car stop me go over 50...
The feature of reading sign and speed limiter should not combine
Take my example of driving on 40 and pick up 30 sign, if the car suddenly apply break on itself to 30, it will cause accident for the car following me.0 -
It would appear from above posts that few people have actually read what the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) have proposed.
This is from their press release:
Last night the EU agreed a provisional deal on new vehicle safety standards for 2022. One of the new requirements is to fit an overridable Intelligent Speed Assistance system as standard. These systems are already available today.
I have this already on my car - a 3 year old BMW - an option I specified on ordering the car.
It reads the speed limit signs and tells me if I am exceeding the limit - It's pretty accurate both in the UK and on mainland Europe, showing the current limit on the dash.
On German Autobahnen sections with no limit is shows the standard end of limit sign - it even shows temporary restrictions, e.g. lower limits in wet conditions.
It does have a GPS input as well in that if you leave a built up area, or a low speed section and do not pass a higher limit sign it will after several minutes raise the displayed speed.
If I select/actuate the limiter it can prevent the car from exceeding the limit - but, and it's a big but - I can easily over-ride it by pressing hard on the accelerator.
I can also switch it off.
I don't think there is any intention (yet) to have a system which would automatically restrict a car's speed without the approval of the driver.
To me it's just another useful feature like auto lights or auto wipers - both selectable and over-rideable by those who may find them fitted but do not wish to use them.
Storm in a tea-cup from the usual newspapers in the UK.0 -

It wouldn't on 2 counts, 1) the driver should be a safe distance from the vehicle in front , safe as in allowing appropriate stopping distance for the road conditions 2) the driver behind may also have a modern car which features autonomous braking systems.0 -

Mine does too, however as it is linked with the sat nav and out of date information, some roads it does display incorrect information (however I would not try and use that as a defence if ever I was unfortunate enough to be caught short) .0 -
2021 should be a bumper year for car sales'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0

I recently had a hire car that had a “heads-up” display showing the speed limit... I was thrilled with it until it showed me 110 on a single carriageway section of derestricted road then 30 on another bit of derestricted road but back to 60 on the next section of 40 mph limit. It’s a good idea, but the practice has still a way to go!0

GPS is only as good as the database it is based on...Mine is up to date and yet is wrong not infrequently.0
