Speed limiters mandatory in new cars from 2022

The EU have agreed that all new vehicles sold from 2022 will have a 'black box' and speed limiters. Sounds like a bad idea to me - drivers will get used to the car deciding the maximum speed and then carry on at that speed in heavy rain/fog.
But at least it'll mean people might actually do 20mph in a 20 zone.

I don’t think it will work like that.0

I'm not sure I would want it based on GPS. GPS can think you are on a parallel road with a lower speed limit. Imagine what chaos that would cause. I'm guessing it will be a much blunter instrument limiting the ultimate top speed. Remember also it needs to consider German Autobahnen.0

And within a couple of days someone will have developed a hack which will override such a device.
Can you imagine all those affluent London Luvvies tootling about at 20/30mph in their supercars?"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

No hack required, it will be in the system from day 1.
"However, the new system as it's currently envisaged will not force drivers to slow down. It is there to encourage them to do so, and to make them aware of what the limit is, but it can be overridden. Much like the cruise control in many current cars will hold a particular speed, or prevent you exceeding it, until you stamp on the accelerator."

So basically, my present car has pretty much a similar thing already? I can choose between Cruise Control or Speed Limiter, the latter preventing me from exceeding a certain set speed. The only difference being that the proposed device will automatically detect the speed limit in force?"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. Correct - most likely by reading signs.0 -

I'd like to hope that it'll be based on detailed mapping, at least in addition to sign-reading. Realistically, this is all functionality that's built in to many modern satnavs. And, as we all know, they're absolutely infallible. Oh, yes. 100% accurate 100% of the time. Mmmhmmm. Updated constantly. Yup, definitely. Never out of date in any way. No, sir.0
