Once, years ago, I was in a situation a little similar to that of the OP (ie I had bought a non-refundable air ticket and thought that I would be unable to travel).

The advice of the travel agent who had sold me the ticket was as follows: tell your doctor that your back has started to cause you pain, particularly when you sit in the same place for a long time, and so you do not feel up to the journey. Ask your doctor to write a note advising you not to travel, and use that to claim back the ticket cost from your insurance.

I chose not to follow this kind advice. I trust my doctor, and want her/him to be able to trust me and to have as accurate information as possible about my state of well-being in order to take care of me. Furthermore, I suspect that any other "bright ideas" would prove equally disastrous, for your own self-esteem apart from anything else.

My advice is to go, and be determined to enjoy your holiday. There are all sorts of ways to make new friends while abroad. You might like to explore the couch-surfing web site: posters there offer hospitality but are keen to meet visitors just for a drink, meal, sight-seeing or whatever.

    I've been Money Tipped!
To end my little bit I go along with your last sentence Voyager and I would go and have a holiday, but at least you have offered a "loophole", many thanks.

Voyager gives a very good reason why you would not want to use such a 'loophole', a good relationship with your GP is worth much more than the cost of an unused air ticket x
    Gone ... or have I?

    Plus, it's fraud.

It's one thing getting a few days off work, but quite another commiting a financial fraud.

Plus, you may need to declare it on your next insurance form.
So if you do have a problem with your back when you are on holiday, you might not be covered.

There is no "loophole", only fraud.

Nowhere did I say I wanted to rip off the insurers..If that was the case..I would not need to post here to think of a way.
I thought it was just a matter of saying the right reason the right way and I could maybe save my money..but true, my reason is not justifiable. I simply (mis)read my policy in a way that i thought I had an 'unforeseen circumstance'.

Strangely only Lynsey seems to understand what I have been trying to say..

(thx to Voyager for the travel suggestion)

    I dont want anything illegal..

If the main MSE man reads this..my intentions were not devious despite what folk seem to infer, if they were why would I broadcast it??

Thanks for everything, I apologise for any anxieties caused be misunderstandings..and I'm even impressed at how ready folk are to help out...Do not worry..you won't be seeing me on Crimewatch

    :p
