I would say 'enjoy' is a strong word to describe the combustion engine once you have lived with an EV :).

I had the chance to go back to a combustion car after our original Tesla was written off and the third party insured offered a settlement check for £75K, so £4K more than what we paid for the car. Any sensible person would have grabbed the money and run, but I just couldn't do it, and ended up making them order a replacement Tesla which was higher spec than our car original which meant I had to pay £4K, nuts I know :rotfl:.

Would do the same again now, once you have experienced how good EVs are there is no gain back.

Yes, my comment was a little tongue in cheek - but when the time comes i will look back on a lot of the ICE cars i've owned with fond memories. :)

Conversely, in 20 years time we will all have to drive EVs - and by then the products have matured, the infrastructure will be there to support them, and the prices will be more palatable.

So maybe enjoy our internal combustion engines while we can? ;)

You aren't taking the government at their word are you. You are are more naïve than I thought.

Its a Cooper didnt you say? Dealers are asking from £5700 for 8 year old low miles Coopers. I think £6K from a private sale could be "optimistic". Try plugging it in to WBAC for the raw trade value....

Yeah different people like different things. I know exactly what i want when i'm buying and when i want to change i tend to do so very quickly - i've my homework done RE: prices etc.

The other constraint i have is that i live in Northern Ireland so the pool of used cars is much more constrained, meaning less likelihood of that car with the right colour combo, right spec, right miles, right history, right price. And being on a day rate i tend not to want to take time off to maybe end up driving a considerable distance and looking at a car that isnt as described.

I've bought used in recent the past, done quite well out of it too, so i'm not adverse to it.

As i've said, i've currently settled on around £10K depreciation every three years and the Cooper S i have is there or thereabouts on that. I wouldnt want an older car with a compromised spec to save a relatively small amount of money.

Ah possibly...probably closer to £5k then. WBAC say £4,300 so I would certainly advertise at £5,500, and looking on AT that seems reasonable for comparable cars.

I nearly bought a car from NI as it happens! Yea delivery is not cheap, and neither is travelling far for to see cars so I completely appreciate that!

I think I agree with you though, an extra £3/4k given your circumstances seems a small price to pay so I can see your POV clearly.

As an aside....are you keeping your eye on the new EV Mini...?? My GF has asked me to check it out and wants to look at it :p

My mother in law is too. She had a Zoe on PCP for 2 years and now a Leaf PCP deal finishing soon. Her previous ICE car was a Mini. However if your after bang cor your £££ the Mini EV isnt great. Looks like BMW is using old i3 tech underneath, so will be 100 miles range in winter.

Been a Mini it wouldn't be cheap either, the i3 when speced is coming in at over £40k!! Bare in mind when the Mini EV arrives your be able to get a LR RWD Model 3 with 330 miles of real life range and sub 6 second 0-60 time for under £40k!!

Not at all. I've been a car enthusiast for 40+ years. I think it would be naive of you to think a move -> hybrid -> EV isnt happening.

Other than for die hards and classic motoring enthusiasts, i think the vast bulk of ICE cars will be off our roads by then or before it.

I've bought cars from the mainland before and i'd have no objections to doing it again - particularly if new via a broker. But as you say its the extra time and effort commitment to go do it. I guess if it was totally the right car then yes, i'd go for a sat morn and either drive it back or have it transported back, but it would need to be a very significant saving to make the figures stack up. If you're on the mainland already then its a different kettle of fish!

Yes looking forward to seeing the EV MINI. Will be interesting to see how they package it and make it work. Pricing will be key, but then you could spend 35K on a JCW (or Cooper S for that matter) if you really put your mind to it....

If they do a REx version that would be great, but not sure if they have those plans.

I think the MINI brand is a prime candidate for electric, fun cars, but BMW seem to have been focusing on i cars until now. Maybe that will change soon.

Yeah, no-one is going to drive an EV and think "I really wish I could get back in my 1.4 Astra". There will be some nice ICE cars that people will want to hang onto for a long time, but easily 90+% of the ICE market is white good vehicles that noone gives a stuff about.

Agreed. When i said "we" i was referring to "us" motoring enthusiasts.

1.4 Astra drivers - probably not so much....

Working in an industry that supplies nickel (required for EV) every indication we see is that this will happen. Maybe it will be scaled back a little, but industry is moving quickly to capitalise on this demand. I can't share the figures, but the predicted growth rates on required metals is staggering.

It is being taken very seriously in our sector.
