I think I'll have to get one for SWMBO's laptop, as I can only back that up irregularly. Wonder if you can encrypt the backup so that personal data isn't left unsecured?
Only slight worry is that Maplin says it's been discontinued, though I'm not sure if that's just from their site...Jumbo

Yes its dead easy to use, just plug it in and it backs up all you files, it does not back up programs though
You can buy a actual click free drive but they are very expensive.
I cant see the data without the clickfree plugged in so it must be secure.0 -
I use an external drive device to back up onto. and also a nas device, so multiple backups exist !:)A new abacus

Here's a quick Q: I have an external HD doing a weekly back up with the whole trimmings (scheduled to run overnight every Sunday). Now, in the past backups wouldn't work on a 'new' PC (say if old one just died) as it had a different motherboard/CPU etc. This lead to issues with the back up and the registry holding info for the previous HW set-up. So if I ever decide to get a completely new PC (different MOBO/CPU, but exact same OS), would my external back-up image work first time?0

if it's a disk image, no (unless the hardware is very similar). The individual files and folders may be accessible depending what software you are using
a backup of files would work though!!

data files would/should be accessible but -- due to new system -- existing drivers etc. would not be compatible with new hardware. :cool:A new abacus:A.

Not sure whether I am feeling
or
External HD bought, installed and first back-up done.
So easy - why did I put it off for so long?0 -
For a free very basic backup for Windows users look at the xcopy command. (run: xcopy /? from the command line for more info) - you can use this to copy all your files that are marked for archive (i.e. have changed) to a backup storage location. I use this with success via a shortcut on my desktop. Every time i want to run a back up I just attach the external storage and double click the shortcut. Nice and easy and its free because all modern versions of windows has XCOPY. You can also link this to the windows sheduler service for automated scheduled backups. Baisc but functional and FREE!0
