@watchingthepennies:Seems this device is USB2 compatible after all, so yes, it will work with your pc!

But, you can not simply plug it in - regular backups take some effort.

Yes, from your laptop sharing would be required.

In Windows 7, backups & sharing are doddles.

@urk: this is a common problem with Nero - it gets worse when you try to restore! If you are backing up Windows 7, use its Backup utility - it's one of the best I have come across. Failing that, Acronis TrueImage has worked each time I use it - I can recommend it. Symantec Ghost is another good product, but Acronis is cheaper.

Hi, I've got an external Verbatim hard drive with Nero BackItUp 4 Essentials on it. However, after a crash earlier this year Nero now doesnt work.
Any places I can get this free, or an easy to use free alternative please? Ta
    I'm on XP..
I would simply move to Windows 7 - its backup utility is quite good! Also, Windows XP will be unsupported in 2014, so I'd bite the bullet and move to Win 7 as soon as you can.

But, Acronis TrueImage is around 20 quid and it's good...

You have to use a real backup utility, like Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost! None of those compression utility / toys will work. There is another way, but it depends on you having Administrator access to the computer!
  • A while back I had an important word document that somehow got corrupt. I lost about half a day's worth of work due to that. Now I always make multiple copies of my most important document at several stages of completion. Doing this has actually made me more organised.
I managed to catch up on the work but I am a bit wiser from the experience. A few days ago another file got corrupt but I was able to retrieve an earlier version so only 30 minutes were wasted as oppose to 3 hours.

At last I've bought an external HDD, but the plug and play software doesn't work, I think because the machine is 8 years old, the help section points to BIOS issues.

I'm happy to back up manually each week.

SO far, I've copied certain folders over, so:

    1. Microsoft Office documents,
    2. photos,
    3. .pst file from outlook (using outlook backup)
    4. settings file from Accessories using the transfer wizard.

    Am I missing anything?

Also the settings transfer wizard seems to be compressing the .pst file to back it up - so will I get 2 copies of that?

  • What version of Windows are you running? There should be a backup program under Accessories-System Tools, which should be able to automate most of what you're doing. You can then set it to run automatically every day or every week to save you the hassle...

windows 7 back up is rubbish, thanks to some problem i developed yesterday by installing a little 328kb program, my computer wouldnt boot this morning, even though i uninstalled the program before shutting down.
program was called 7 Taskbar Tweaker v3.4, so today after windows repair failed. i decided to loose what i download and ran windows backup restore, but it wouldnt let me, i booted from a cd and got told you cant use the backup as its on the same hdd. yes it is but not on C 55gb but on E 876gb, so useless.
used hirens boot cd so i could get access to the files on the hdd, moved the files i downloaded to the E drive. got the ISO image for easeus to-do 4, which i had also backed up to a image file. and burned the iso to a cd.
then i got my system back.
Seem with windows backup you need 2 hdds. partitioning 1 hdd into 2 doesnt work.

Google Drive that is just about to be released, looks like a great and convenient cloud backup system.
