Backing Up

  • I need some advice on backing up. Currently our data sits on a NAS to allow both the desktop and laptop to access it. I ideally need it somewhere else in case this fails.

I've been looking at using online backup services such as Mozy. How secure are they?

Another suggestion was to have a second NAS of equivalent size with syncs with the present one.

    Which is the best option?

Copy it to either the desktop or the laptop, or both, and backup the most important data to dvd, that should protect you from everything other than fire or theft.

The best option is of course an off-site solution. This could be an external hard disk which you keep with a friend or relative or a online service. But you should look into how your data is encrypted.

As a start you should have at least one backup at home. It is much more likely that a hard disk fails than your house burning down or any other disaster.

Sound advice that. Many thanks. Isn't using the on-line backup services a slow process seen as a domestic broadband account only has a small upload speed?

Do you have any suggestions for encrypting the data for backup?

The backup software should only transfer changed data. So only the initial backup will take a while. Then it should only backup when your PC is idle.

Truecrypt for your local backup and if you're using Windows. For Linux there are better solutions available like ecryptfs which don't require a container file/partitions.
  • I use Livedrive which is inexpensive and backups everything up without me having to remember!
  • I had forgotten that I already had a Dropbox Account which I had set up to receive a couple of files from a work colleague. Has anybody had any experience of using them for backups? Does their service do 'as it says on the tin'?

    Does it work with Truecrypt?

  • Hi

Well I have a server running raid5, and backup my data on the raid every hour, and then move to a nas every 4 hours, and then to a external usb drive every day a 10pm, this also includes emails as I use Iscsi to create a drive on the server so my eamail client thinks its a local drive and store my emails on the server too.

As you might guess I have been stung before not backing up data and losing the lot.

    Wow this is thorough.
  • Just tried Crashplan - impressed so far - can backup to external drives, other pc's, online etc - also backs up networks drives. Works out about £3/m for online backup - got decent upload speeds too. 30 day free trial of online, main app is free
