I've been using this for a while on my home PC: http://www.buddybackup.com and it seems to be doing a good job! I've got it backing up between my laptop and my portable hard disk drive I use for work. I had a nasty crash last year and I lost loads of files (most didn't matter but loosing photos sucks) so I am determined not to go through it again!!

 have you found any downside to this as yet? - am thinking about using it but am concerned as it is free what is in it for the company that runs it?

I found Genie Timeline as a freebie on Giveaway of the day and for me it is the best I've seen, at this price. It will do simple selected file/folder backups auto updated every few minutes without interaction, right up to full backup or systems recovery. It's easy to set up or change settings, no hassle and works silently. Files can be accessed on another computer without having Genie installed. That is where I find most backup programs fall down. I don't see the point of having a back up if you can't access it anywhere. Obviously security could be any issue but I can't have it both ways.
Anyone know of better - free- alternatives I can try in case my early assessment is wrong.

Better off buying hard drive and enclosure and will hold . . .. . . .. . ..loads!

    And, alot more reliable!
Offers no more reliability (or redundancy) than the hard drive in the computer.

Hoping someone can help me here, I bought a system from Acer direct which arrived with no discs whatsoever no back up discs or utility discs, Acer maintain this is now standard and want to charge me £16 for these, I've never bought direct from Acer before but all systems I have purchased have always been supplied with discs can someone confirm what the situation is with this, the facility to restore to factory settings is disabled on the pc and it will not produce a back up disc so is being returned.

Another cry for help, I'm afraid. I just bought a WD external hard drive, WD Elements, recommended by someone not accessible to me. Its plug and play. Not for me! Its operating, my computer has detected it, and I desperately want to back up everything - I'm moving on Wednesday, I'd like to have it done for then. But I've no idea what to do. It sounds as though I need to download a driver. Don't know how to find it. What do I do then?

I realise I sound incredibly naive, but I saw it was describing a pdf of how to instal it - I've found the pdf, but its about how to plug it in, not how to use it - and even I know how to plug it in :(

    Please help!

I think I've found the answer to my own question in the community section of the wd website: its just a drive, needs no manual or software, you load it like a flash drive, by copying and pasting. I just started - it needs to be formatted, I think, but apart from that I'm good to go. I think. I'll confirm when its done!

Thanks closed. I don't know what's going on, really, but the answer I found in the wd forum seems to have worked - I copied and pasted into the hdd, and they're all there! 16 gigs at the moment, and counting.

    Thank you!

disk imaging is a better backup, windows7 has it built in if you have it, otherwise try the free software I linked to.
