Why is speeding socially acceptable?

When I lived in the UK I would regularly speed , my journey took me down the A21 to the Tonbridge turn off , there were never any police about(mid '90s) , then a change of career path , I joined the police, being first on scene to a fatal collision involving a 5 year old child , soon curbed my ways .0

Gross simplification. Depends on the speed. You will burn quite a lot more fuel at 20mph than at 50mph.0 -

Its socially acceptable because the vast majority of time there is no repercussions.
The same could be said for not wearing a seatbelt. If I'd never worn a seatbelf, the repercussions would be zero. Not once has my seatbelt been of any use.
But that doesn't mean it's ok to not wear one.0 -

True. In fact, I think there's evidence that 20mph zones actually increase pollution compared to 30mph.
