The replies in this thread are interesting, although very few answer (or attempt to answer) why speeding is socially acceptable. In fact, most the comments just reiterate it.

I'm assuming self-driving cars will stick to the limits, so I wonder how many people will actually want to use self-driving cars if it means they can't go that little bit faster and arrive home a few minutes earlier.

Your answer is in your question - if 90% of people are speeding then 90% of people have sympathy for those who get caught.

But my question was "Why is speeding socially acceptable?"

The fact that 90% of people speed goes no way to answering the question. It just confirms that the question is a valid one.

If you think you are a good enough driver to react to anything that the road can throw at you then you've got a lot to learn.

You mean like, for example, Lewis Hamilton?

Its socially acceptable when there is no impact. For example, 80MPH on a motorway - even the police dont enforce that.

I dont believe doing 40MPH in a 30 is socially acceptable nor should it be accepted. Nor should we accept the careless driving that seems prevalent these days such as not bothering to indicate, or pulling out without bothering to look, etc.

Because, as per the list and link i provided earlier, there are much bigger issues with driving happening out there, no matter what the "45MPH Freddies" would have us believe

Its your belief that it is - its my belief that it isnt.

Why dont you do a poll asking "is it socially acceptable to do 40MPH in a 30MPH zone?"

I would say the result would be an overwhelming no.

I call them Mono Speed Morons. They should be grouped with Middle Lane Morons, all taken to a field and carpet-bombed.

Maybe speeding is ok at 3am when there is no one around?
A guy in a range rover with a private plate barged his way into a motorway queue, slowing down the middle lane, he then filtered past me and he was playing with his mobile.
A social outcast maybe, but nothing I could do, not worth getting upset about.

Its socially acceptable because the vast majority of time there is no repercussions.
