You seem to be struggling to appreciate the difference between the main site which makes money and the forum that does not - You also appear to be making figures up as the cost of running the forum has not been claimed to be millions - as posted earlier in the thread it was less than 6 figures (under £100,000)

"A Quote from Martin from over 14 years ago

But so what if the forum was making money instead of losing it there would still be no reason to run their own competitions - the posts in the "I won" section provide just a partial record of how useful some others find this section

All companies have parts that make losses & others that don’t the figure overall is called profit/loss

I really don’t see / understand why your happy to do comps on other sites & when the site ur using to get them from is rather obvious to do even ONE.

Facebook a prime example, it’s a free platform where the ppl posts like this one & everyone is up in arms for using ur data to make money. If we use some of the thinking on some of these posters here, Facebook really hasn’t done anything wrong really.

If a one band self employed window cleaner is able to fork out a £10 Nando’s voucher on TW is it too far fetch for this site to do a half decent comp themselves.

After dealing with one or your "fictions" you just make other spurious comparisons.

So I think it is best just to say that regardless of the multiple reasons for them not to do so, you think the site should run competitions.

With all the reasons why you yourself think MSE is above doing a comp I do believe MSE should run better comps

Good idea but the few threads i looked at had no one from the site commenting so can only assume its the BIN.

And yet in an earlier post you wrote "If MSE Audrey is reading this" assuming there was a better chance that they'd read this and not the Site Feedback ?!?!

I can understand the logic in that offering competitions might bring more people to the site, might bring more people to switch energy supplier or however it is MSE gets commission and therefor make MSE more money ... whether or not they should or need to do this is anyone's guess, i can also see the logic in rewarding their users who contribute to the forum (which does work as a promotional aid to the main site and in turn, does aid the website in making more money) ... I don't think there is really a right or wrong answer in regards to whether they should do it.

In regards to Facebook, they make millions every year, lots of people enter competitions on their platform but they don't themselves offer competitions because, frankly, they don't need to.

In MSE's case, I think the hassle of running, promoting and administering a competition probably isn't worth the hassle as far as the reward to them is concerned.

The weekly e-mail from the main site goes out to 12 million users, it would have to be an impressive competition to attract a large enough number of new users (who then go onto use the other, potentially money making, parts of the site) to make any real difference to that figure (just a tiny 1% increase would require 120,000 new users)

The moaning about the signed/not signed book giveaway would certainly have stopped competitions running if it was my decision but it also illustrates the need to run them properly and the administration/record keeping would probably cost more than the value of any small prize.
  • Hi everyone

We love running giveaways and would love to do them again at some point in the future. We have bigger calls on our team's time at the moment though, so we can't promise them any time soon.
