It wouldn’t just be people who post on the site that entered though. It would get posted elsewhere and would have compers who don’t usually use or contribute to the forum coming to enter

    Kinda like what we do?

You mean exactly like we do lol.
& didn't the last comp end up having a misleading prize (a signed book that turned out to have a printed signature & people defending it because it was given away by here & mocking the OP for complaining, instead of totally calling it out which would've happened if it had been a company on facebook)?

Exactly like we do. Comps are taken from other sites or social media and repasted here. Sometimes with whole pages of text containing terms, conditions etc. I'm glad for that obviously. People see nothing wrong with it at all and so it would be pot kettle black to moan if anyone did the same thing for any comp posted on this site regardless of where it originated. We can't moan at people for doing what we all do ourselves. As for this forum running competitions I don't see why they should. Companies run comps to promote themselves. Hence sharing, retweeting etc. It's to draw people to their brand. This site doesn't feel the need to do that obviously. I don't have a problem with that.

You’ve all missed my point. Mansey said the forum should do comps to give back to the contributors. As per my reply it wouldn’t just be contributors who entered it would be everybody, so to say it should be as a way of giving back to posters is pretty pointless.
You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

I didn’t take part in that discussion what was the conclusion!

I take it your not a comper & only a non-comper would say such a thing. I don’t use the other parts of the site myself but as a comper I would say it’s giving back.

From everything I see from Martin it’s a middle man who points the way but any money back is often from the bigger players like banks or the big 5 traffics.

I had hoped their would have been more of a rallying cry from the comper’s who spend like hours either posting or doing the comps to get MSE to do more comps but I’m only hearing the opposite

To take your points in order

    1) Did not take part in it myself but at end of the day it was his to do with as he liked.

    2) Very wrong but irrelevant anyway - it is the forum that costs money to run while it is the main site that makes it. I also cannot see any reasonable person objecting to money being spent on worthwhile projects instead of being given away in commercially unnecessary competitions.

    3) Not quite sure of this point but the site details deals and the payments to users come from the sites offering the deals.

    4) Most compers are presumably happy that they get to use the forum for free even if they don't use the other parts of the site which are actually helping to pay for everything.

Yes. Altruism/Commercialism, yada, yada... for those who only do competitions on this site, I for one am very grateful for the platform for collaboration at no cost. That in itself is giving back to those who use the site.

I don't really see any why reason they couldn't run an iPad competition twice a year, but make it only eligible for people with over say 200 posts, that way only contributors will be eligible ... or the first yearly comp is for 200 posts+ and the second is just from everyone registered and "active" (ie having logged in within the last 6 months) ... but on the other hand I also see that there's no real reason for them to do this so although it would be a "nice thing to do", there isn't really a logical business reason to do this as they wouldn't really benefit from it ... they might get some new people signing up, but if they're not contributing then whats the point?

In all seriousness Laks deserves something, I remember when she started and how she quickly accumulated her first million thanks.

I know others have also contributed to a high level but not to the level of Laks.

There used to be £50 post of the month but that stopped years ago.

Agreed, they could add a wee "Donate" button to every one who chooses to supply their Paypal details or something and then if you're in the credit card forum and someone posts something helpful to you and saves you a bit of money then you can donate to them as a "thank you", or if you win a competition for £1000 that someone posts then you can donate £5, £20, £100 ... whatever to the poster ... that would encourage people to get contributing, most people probably wouldn't donate but a lot of people would.
