The fuel saving suggestions are all valid although collectively they cannot combat the outrageously high prices we pay here in the UK for fuel.
The only way to save money is to leave your car in the drive. I try to combine journeys, car share or simlpy walk within reason.
Recently Ive been getting dropped off at work by my partner and running 7 miles home. I've lost almost a stone in a month...0 -

Clearly that's just not true is it, as the less petrol you use the less you'll pay in fuel costs. I pay less now for fuel than I did when it was 1.16 a litre due to improving my fuel economy - have to say the biggest impact on fuel economy for my journey has been motorway speeds - sticking nearer to 60 than 70 makes a huge difference, and only adds a couple of minutes to my journey.
Having said that, if everyone started being more fuel efficient, duty would just go up to make up for lost government revenue, so we'd be back where we started...0 -
Please go to the daily mail website, then motoring and you will find the results of the new research results on "premium" grade fuel.
I am not able to post a link. If you cannot find it, please let me know.0 -

A quote from it:-
"The fuel companies claim that the added cost is outweighed by the efficiency and performance benefits they bring - with one company claiming its high octane fuel offers up to 25 percent more mileage.
However, the What Car? test found that although most of these fuels do improve fuel economy, the advantage is always less than the manufacturer's claim and the price premium.
Tesco claims improved economy of 'up to 25 percent' for its 99 RON 'Momentum' petrol, compared to its regular 95 RON unleaded. However, the study found only a two percent efficiency improvement, yet the fuel costs 3.7 percent more per litre.
It's the same with diesel superfuel, with the study finding that BP Ultimate diesel gave a 1.4 percent improvement in miles per gallon. BP claims 'up to three percent' compared to its regular diesel, and charges 3.6 percent more per litre.
What Car? says its testing method was “rigorous,” carried out on various roads over hundreds of miles, and by a former senior research engineer for the AA.
Responding to the results, fuel companies maintain that high octane fuels provide justifiable benefits.
A spokesman for Total, whose Excellium high octane diesel was actually found to offer lesser economy than its regular diesel, said: “During our most recent trials, which lasted 21 months, a fleet of over 30,000 vehicles ran on Excellium Diesel. And vehicles in that trial experienced average consumption improvements of between 1.5 per cent and five per cent.”
Why would you use an "average" that is defined as "between 1.5per cent and 5 per cent" ?
Unless you are fudging figures somehwere?
1 vehicel had an average improvement of 5 per cent, the other 29,999 had 1.5 per cent? :cool:0 -

The average would therefore be 3.25, however that takes no account of frequency.
I think what the article was trying to say that 1 car did 1.5% better, another did 5% better, and the rest got somewhere in between.Thank you for reading this message.0 -
Interesting thread re Brands v. supermarkets.
I am sure that some additives do "clean" engines.
By law I believe fuel has to have a certain cetane/RON level per type.
Engines are designed to run with a requirement for a certain minimum level. Appreciate that some highly tuned"performance" cars and may be less tolerant.
I have monitored all my cars.
When I had petrol cars super unleaded made no real difference to either performance or economy.
I have driven diesels of various types for approaching 20 years and in all that time have never noticed a difference based on the supplier.
Used to pass a bunker site on way to work and it had tankers of all names coming out of it. I have also noticed non logoed tankers on branded forecourts.
At the end of the day if you want to pay extra for a brand that is your choice. Pretty much the same as paying £1.40 for milk in W/A/M/T rather than £1 in Aldi.
Read an article once for coffee shops that charged a premium if you wanted a fair trade coffee, it turned out that apparently all/vast majority of the coffee they used was fair trade.:)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop...
