  • Not sure how you would like to support your statement. I am very much interested to see some proof of this. What do you say about using higher grade fuel? Do you think it helps improving the mileage?

Cheapest pretrol/diesel has nothing to do with the amount of miles you could do to the pound... It's all down to the grade and how rich the fuel is. For example, Sainsbury/Tesco's usually sell their fuel for 5p-10p cheaper then BP/Shell... Why do you think this is? You think they can actually get it cheaper then BH/Shell? Lol. No. What happens is, they get the fuel, and mix it up a little percentage with their super duper special substance they claim does no damage to your engine, and sell the fuel for cheaper, giving you the impression your doing more miles per litre... WRONG!

Because Salisbury's/Tesco's fuel are now a lower grade/less richer, the injectors needs to pull in extra amounts of fuel in order to give the same output/performance while the fuel from BP/Shell with the higher grade/more richer uses lesser fuel to give the same output. End result? Same amount of money spent on fuel... In this case, I'd rather go get the better graded fuel then the cheaper kind and save having extra engine wear over time.

Example: Sainsbury fuel: £1. BP Fuel: £1.10. (yes, in everyone's dreams... :D) Sainsbury fuel does 4 miles to the litre while BP fuel does 4.5 miles to the litre. So from a whole 50 litre tank, you've done an extra 25 miles for only £5 more, which turns out EXSACTLY the same as if you where to fill up the extra £5 at Sainsbury to make up for the 25 miles lost per tank.

there is no proof because it's nonsense.

Adams1 is claiming that certain retailers dilute their fuel, sell it cheaper and makes everyone think you achieve higher mpg.

Depends on your engine, most car engines can't make use of the higher octane. You will get very slightly better MPG, but not enough to offset the extra cost.

The Esso petrol station near the Circus Tavern in Purfleet, Essex normally matches or beats the local Tescos, no contest as unless you are saving huge amounts then there is little point in buying Tesco fuel.

After all you wouldn't buy Tesco Cola if it cost the same as Pepsi, would you?

The reason, peterbaker, that the Met Police and London Ambulance Service use BP is because we use BP cards and have a discount for sole usage of BP fuel. The other rea and now son is the fact that the quality of the fuel is a known quantity, unlike cheap supermarket fuel, remember the issue with fuel contamination with supermarket fuel in East London and Essex a few years ago.

I know that Essex Police use whatever fuel they can get and have a policy of using supermarkets to save fueling costs, however I reckin this may change when they start having reliability problems, no matter what anybody says BP, Shell etc sell better quality fuel. They are oil companies, not supermarkets selling a bought in commondity for a given profit margin, the supermathets know as much about fuel as they do about carrots.

But then some are happy to use the cheapest they can find, personally I think there is still such a thing as quality.

Some on here don't agree, that is their opinion and they are entitled to it, but by the same token this is my opinion.

Anyone else wonder why Martin hasn't mentioned tyres in his latest "how to cut petrol costs" article?:money:

It's fine switching off the aircon to save a few percent, but getting a good deal on energy saving tyres will save 5% of fuel costs because of the reduction in rolling resistance - and that happens whether it's a warm and sunny day when you'd use the aircon, or a normal rainy day when you wouldn't....

  • Most drivers get in car, start the engine and sort things out, change the CD and maybe send a text or make a call home to say "I'm on my way" then put on the seat belt we all do it Don't we? Well, how much does that 1-2 minute gap cost a year on your fuel bill if you do this a couple of times a day and it is probably done more often.
    SAVE:T
Move from breakfast TV 5 minutes earier, the news will still sound the same when you get home.
Get in the car and sort things out before you start the engine. I know what you are saying that in winter you run the engine to clear windows, however, the best way is to buy a SCRAPER you probably have one in that clogged up boot you are going to sort at the weekend. It is amazing how good you will feel after scraping all the windows and it will set you up for the day plus saving you a bucketful of CASH.:staradmin

I go further! I live on a quiet road; however if at any time I see a vehicle coming in my direction so that I can't pull out straight away, I don't start the engine until the road is clear. For the first mile or so, I drive slowly (unless it is a busy road) so the engine can 'warm' up.
