I had the following in an e-mail today. I'm hoping it gets noticed by the powers that be at MSE, even Martin himself. I honestly don't know if the type of boycott suggested is the sort of thing Martin would find acceptable, or not.

However it is geared to money saving, so who knows. On the face of it the suggestion came from a private source, though it can't be discounted that it originated from a company other than Esso/BP! It pays to be cynical.

OK I got it wrong. Please ignore. Sorry!

Here is an interesting idea to think about (and act upon?)...unless you've already received the same message independently!

Please see what you think and pass it on if you agree with it.

We are hitting £129.9a litre in some areas now and soon we will be faced with paying £1.50 per litre. So XXXXX offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign' that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS - not sellers control the market place. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one) i.e. ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If all of you send itto at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)....and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on. By the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....

    THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all YOU have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at ESSO/BP). How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell,Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc. i.e. Boycott BP and Esso

I have seen this before. However consider -

    • people that live in a small town with perhaps only one garage which happens to be Esso/BP.
    • Companies that have an account with a garage
    • People that do not see this message
    • People that see this message but don't care!
    • Finally an area where all garages (coincidentally) happen to be the same price (or maybe Esso/BP are the lowest around.
Thank you for reading this message.
  • OK, I have had enough of reading this tripe and am going to unsubscribe from a thread that seems to be populated by morons and idiots -

"Esso & BP the same company" that's like saying that Tesco and Asda are the same company. No they are not! Esso are a US based company (who have tied up with Mobil) and BP are a British based company.

So let's all boycott Esso and BP - think about that for a moment.

BP pay billions in taxes which support the UK economy and which would be reduced.

So instead we're all going to fill up at Shell (Dutch) Texaco (US ) Total (France) and support the tax regimes in those countries - our competitors.

The fuel price is driven by two things:
    1) The international oil price over which no individual oil company has any control
    2) Taxes taken by the UK government and which form the major part of the price we pay today

Go think about that for a moment........

I can understand the frustrations and perhaps we need concerted action such as the fuel protests that occurred some years back.

Some years back a mob of idiots attacked a paediatrician thinking she was a pa*dophile - this reminds me of that!

By all means suggest methods of extracting better economy from your car but targeting a British oil company whilst filling up from international competitors.

Oh, come on! please let's have some educated thinking around this.

    Bye now......

When Cost Co tyre shops supply 2 new tyres they always put the new tyres at the back rather than the front. They say that .....since the vehicle weight (centre of gravity) naturally moves forward under braking this helps front tyres to grip. The rear tyres are lightly loaded under heavy braking, therefore, we need the the better gripping tyres at the back to keep the car in line. I found this a bit counterintuitive but have come round to their logic now.

This old chestnut doing the rounds again is it?
Ok then matey. Here's a lesson in Logistics for you from someone that works on a major brand oil refinery.
Let's take the south coast as an example. Esso Fawley in Southampton believe it or no does NOT supply Esso petrol stations in Scotland even though there's no Esso refinery in Scotland at all. Whos supplied the Esso stations in scotland then? Ineos Grangemouth Refinery! Esso simply buy it from them as it's cheaper than the rail transport north of the wall. Who supplies BP stations UK wide as BP don't have a refinery in the UK any more? ANYONE they wish to buy it from. This goes for ALL the oil refining companies they buy from each other to save money, be it for logistical reasons or otherwise.
On a daily basis I see Road Transporters from as many as 6 or 7 different oil companies as well as the supermarkets pulling out from our place.
Stop buying from one company and the only person you hurt is the forecort franchise owner. We still sell the products as the demand is there so the price remains at the market value.

Now the true Villain in this is the government. They get somewhere in the region of 78p per litre from your 131.9p per litre you pay at the pumps. That's where your cost is!

I just wish people would look further than the end of their bloody noses and see the real highwayman before posting crap like this.
    Sheesh!

Where an old man of Aran goes around and around....

  • Back on Shell here now.... Cheapest in the area at home and near work... 125.9 for Unleaded and 129.9IRC for Diesel.... Although not 100% accurate the trip computer reads higher on Shell than it does on other brands same 60mile day round trip... Same times etc... I find the trip 2mpg out over neck to neck mileage calculations... Maybe coincedence who knows....

BP 2 miles away is still 4pence per litre more for Petrol&Diesel than the Shell...

If they are all buying it from the same oil refinery company, is there any difference in the product by the time it hits the pumps?

Yes, every company will add their own mix of additives, etc.
