Over the last 2 years I have almost doubled my fuel consumption, without changing vehicles.
1. I drive much more smoothly and don't overtake other car users just to get one or two places further along in a big queue.
2. I leave for work a little later and return home a little later- as a result I no longer spend 30 mins plus on a 4 mile crawl through stop/start traffic on a 26 mile (each way) commute into and out of the city of Aberdeen.
My blood pressure is also lower.0 -
is supermarket petrol worse than BP/Shell/Esso etc for fuel economy - I thought this was an old thing and they were all the same now but people keep telling me there's no point filling up at supermarkets as it's inferior stuff, you don't save any money.....0

I think you mean you have HALVED your fuel consumption :-)0 -
Is it.. - I dont own the business.. Im merely a donkey that drives.. But i have to run my own car at the weekend.. The point i was making was that they seem to think that they're not making any extra money from the price increase of Fuel.. But they neglect to mention the extra VAT..
As I said in an earlier post VAT is an EU tax, it supports the EU buearocracy, National government does not benefit from it. We still have to pay it though!
Ps plese excuse spelling of bea...........This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
I'd suspect it wouldn't be for quite that reason, but that the attempt to hold a constant speed would mean more power being applied going uphill than down. It would surely be more fuel-efficient to accelerate slightly on downhills and let the speed bleed off on uphills without increasing power as much.
That is something I have been thinking about since I got a car with cruise control! So it is probably better to follow an HGV which naturally slow when going uphill and speed up going downhill; you also save because the HGV acts as a windbreak (but don't drive too close though).0 -
For disabled motorists on the Motability scheme, why not consider the Mitsubishi Colt diesel auto? It is the only diesel auto on the scheme with nil deposit over three years. The remarkable thing is the diesel auto has BETTER fuel consumption than the equivalent Colt diesel manual!0

Some great ideas here. I'm new to the forums so please be gentle, just treat me as you would your accelerator pedal!!
Not read all 7 pages so I may be repeating someone, sorry if I am.
Depreciation is still the biggest cost of running a modern car. Keep it longer, just one year and reap the benefits. If you can stretch that even further you'll only gain, even if service costs rise a little. Of course this only applies if you swap like for like. Trade in your M3 for a Fiesta and there's another equation. But once you've bought the Fiesta, keep it longer!
One small tip, to go with some of the other minute savings:
In a car park use the first space you see. It may surprise you that it will save time too, and you'll get a bit of exercise walking to the office/shops that bit further. And once you've chosen your space park so you can drive out in a forward gear so all maneuvering is done with an efficient warm engine. If at all possible, and there's more chance at the back of the car park where it's emptier, drive forwards in through an empty space. Sad I know but every little helps0 -
Oh and on the cruise discussion. Do not use it. It's not the electricity, it's that it cannot anticipate, so unless you never look more than 30 m ahead you'll do a better job. Yes 6-7% is possible, even more on hillier motorways.0

Can someone explain why Martin never mentions LPG? I filled up yesterday at 49.9p a litre _ that was cheap mostly it is now 55p ish - yes i know it can cost up to £2000 to have a car converted, and it is a bit less efficient (I've heard figures of 2-8%), but do the sums and i really dont see why it never gets a mention. i do a high mileage but have saved thousands of pounds since 2000 - and it doesnt get a mention!
am i missing something?
