I-LOV-MONEY said:As the interest on savings accounts have gone through the floor, I have decided it not worth the time and effort to put money elsewhere. I have therefore decided to put it all under the mattress. That way I have easy access should I need it.I had some time on my hands earlier today, and reorganised the cash so it is not spread all over the bed. I therefore have some spare room under there. Does anybody want to send me their cash, and I will gladly put it under my mattress?!
Yes do that.
Um... Where do you live?

It's interesting, however, that the government has recently asked the BoE to find a few (£60bn) billion in cash in the system which seems to be unaccounted for. It seems possible that they are considering the possibility that people might withdraw cash if the alternative is to pay institutions to save with them.

Word of advice to some of the forum members who mention they have an NS&I fixed rate bond which is due to mature soon, they automatically roll you into a new Fixed bond for the same term you were on already unless you advise them before it matures. IMPORTANT, they have now also changed the withdrawal terms, previously you could withdraw or close the bond before the term with an interest penalty, now you cannot withdraw till the end of the term so be aware your money is locked in with no access for the full term. If (like me) you did not realise they would automatically roll your money into a new bond at maturity you do have a 30 day cooling off period from the date the new bond starts so you can close your account and withdraw all the funds.Bring on the Bling!3
