Anyone with a Birmingham Midshires savings account know if BM have changed their sort code recently?

I successfully used 20-97-86 as recently as last week. Now their website shows it should be 20-97-78.
  • I've heard nothing about any change. Their website did show 20-97-78 when I opened my account last December, but that code never worked for me. My banking app automatically changed it to 20-97-86. Perhaps BM still haven't changed the incorrect info?

20-97-86 is correct (it used to be 20-97-78), however, they sent a letter out in July stating that w.e.f 16th September 2018 their sort code will be 30-02-51 and their account number will be 06968870. The letter advised that if paying by FP you'll need to use the new numbers from 16th, but if SO or DD the new numbers will be changed automatically.

Comes into effect on 16 September 2018

We are changing the sort code and account number you use to transfer money into your account There is no change to your personal savings account number; you will still need to use your personal savings account number as a reference when you send money to your account Full details of the changes are detailed below so please take a minute to consider how they might affect you. We’re making this change due to the new ring-fencing rules.

    Faster Payments

If you are making a one-off payment online using the Faster Payments service you will need to use the new details:
Sort code: 30-02-51 Account number: 06968870

Reference — Please continue to use your personal savings account number

If you transfer money into your account using the Faster Payments service it will need to be transferred before 5pm in order for the money to reach your account that day, otherwise it will reach your account the next working day.

Money paid in after 5pm on a Fnday will reach your account on Monday.

    CHAPS payments

If you are making a CHAPS payment you will need to use the new details:
Sort code: 30-02-51 Account number 06968870

Reference — Please continue to use your personal savings account number

    Direct Debits and Linked Accounts

If you have a Direct Debrt payment going into your savings account including those from linked accounts, there is no action to take, We will automatically update the payment sort code and account number details.

    Standing Orders

If you pay by Standing Order, there is no action to take, Your payment details will be updated automatically. The bank you pay your Standing Order from may contact you to confirm the new details:

Sort code: 30-02-51 Account numben 06968870

Reference — Please continue to use your personal savings account number

I asked BM about the sort code matter and they sent a baffling email reply that makes little sense.

I'm giving up on them. Ages to open the account and nonsensical comms = can't trust them to look after my money.

They're part of the Lloyds banking group. It's more than a tad excessive not to trust them to look after your money.

S/He's right about the nonsense though. Too long a story but their linked ac stuff is out of the dark ages:

You can't make an internal transfer from one of your BM acs to another without sending funds to your linked ac; then log into your linked ac and send them back but to the other ac.

But you can do it by phone.

    So easy then?

Well no - your giving and receiving ac must have the same linked ac. to do it. And for reasons we're all aware of, for MSEers that ain't likely.

So harmonise linked accounts (which itself isn't a slick process) which will cancel one of your DDs.

That's a bit of a faff but sounds easy enough?

Well no.. because you can't do that the same day as it takes up to 72 hours to purge the system of you old linked ac.

Then log in and harmonise the linked acs.. then phone CS to make the transfer..YAY! (maybe, not got that far yet...).

    How slick is that, not?

And then after the transfer completes log in again.. and change linked ac back in time to catch your next needed DD run (10days to set up).

I was thinking similar things last weekend trying to do some transfers in, wanting to check the money had arrived before sending more.

I was thinking it odd that as Lloyds have a very good internet banking platform (which perhaps has some spare capacity with TSB now doing their own thing ;)) but BM doesn't use it and instead has something from the dark ages.

I did wonder if it was something to do with maintaining a clearly separate brand. :D
