Today an email telling me that my DD debit payment has failed.  It was due on 1st October but I cancelled it just in time.  I am asked to contact Symbio rather than re-submit the payment by bank transfer; is that the normal response?
Yes, it seems to be.  Their T&Cs state that payment has to be by DD because they don't have a mechanism to reconcile one-off payments with individual accounts.  However I phoned them after my DD bounced because I'd cancelled it, they sent a link, I paid the amount and they emailed a receipt.  Details here.
I'll do the same thing again if the SoLR start date means I have to pay for a few days more; if that method no longer works I'll just send Symbio or their administrators a cheque to clear the account.

Here's an interesting question: Symbio have estimated an enormously inflated meter reading for the end of October. How feasible is it to use this reading as the start/end reading with the new supplier? What if I somehow neglect to actually look at my meter and take an actual reading?

One assumes that you might get away with it if you hadn't been sending accurate meters reading for the past few months which would show that their estimates are fantasy.

Dozy Ofgem have managed to include a broken link for E.On Next's welcome site.  The correct URL is www.eonnext.com/symbio-energy. The good news is that it seems that you can escape E.On Next even if you haven't already started to switch.  Ofgem state (my emphases) that:-
    • Your account with E.ON Next will be fully set up in the coming weeks or months, and they will reach out to you to confirm once this has happened.
    • If customers wish to change their tariff or switch supplier, they should ask to be switched to another E.ON Next tariff, or shop around. You won’t be charged any exit fees.
Similarly, E.On Next (my emphases) state:-
    • I’m in the process of switching to another supplier. Will this switch still happen?

Your switch will continue as normal so you don’t need to do anything. The supplier you have chosen will be in touch with you soon.
    • Can I switch supplier as you're setting up my account?

Once we start setting up your new account with us, there will be a period of 2-3 weeks where you won’t be able to switch to another supplier. We’ll let you know when this starts.

Edit: Sorry, you'll have to copy and paste that link, MSE insists on mangling it if I include a hyperlink.

Just found the E.On Next Flex rates and chucked them into my spreadsheet.  My bill for Symbio 1Sep to 3 Oct £42.63, new rate for same bill £74.02, a 69% increase. Old annual cost £439.86, new cost 745.42. £37pm to £62. On a small positive note, my Santander cashback will increase.  It was good while it lasted.

If NextFlex is what we end up on then my annual bill is going from £1050 to £1757 thats a £700 increase - ouch.

I might have to go out an start chopping down trees to burn them.

I will have to console myself with the fact that my gas rate per kWh is 3.11 fixed until 1 April 2022 and hope that SSE don't go down the pan!
