Hyundai i40, less than 2 years old and rust not covered!
I bought a 10 month old Hyundai i40 last July from Arnold Clark and even though I was assured the Hyundai 5 year warranty was great I decided to pay an extra £295 for Arnold Clark protect which protects the inside and outside of the car (The spiel says its a high-tech polymer sealant guards your paintwork from UV rays, acid rain, traffic film, road salt, tree sap, spills and stains, industrial pollution and chemical car washes).
The car now has rust along the roofline at the top of the windscreen and I’m now being told it’s not covered under the warranty. How can this be? Surely the amazing 5 year Hyundai warranty should cover it, and if not the Arnold Clark protect should’ve stopped this. It’s the most I’ve ever paid for a car as I thought I’d have no additional maintenance costs (other than servicing) for the next few years so I’m really upset about this. Anyone know if there’s anything I can do?

I would suspect the rust has arrived from stone chip or similar damage, polymer sealant cannot protect against that.
Autoglym kit
fabric protector
A couple hours of your time may have saved you £260 though.0 -

There about 5 tiny wee patches along the roofline so I doubt that as they’re in a row so I’d have to have been very unluckyto get that many chips scattered along the roofline. Additionally I’m sure they would’ve said that if that was the case.
And thanks for your very unhelpful comment about saving money, that was just what I needed today, a kick when I’m already down.0 -

You may have missed the 'or similar' , I'm not so sure why you think that they would have said, reading customer experiences on here, they are not the most customer focused dealer one can purchase from, besides they were quick to take your £295 on a false promise.
As for your day? …. few here would know how it went, I can tell you though, I would swap my week so far with your at a hearbeat .0 -
It is unusual for it not to be covered at only two years old. Have you contacted Hyundai direct? I have had rust in various Fords over the years and more recently a Renault and all were fixed without quibble. (The Renault poorly but that’s another story). What reason has been given for the rejection? If it is not stone chips could it be from a poor windscreen replacement.0

Whilst extended Hyundai/Kia warranties are good there's a fair amount of wiggle room for them - paticularly when a car has been sourced 2nd hand from outside the dealer network. I've had a couple of Kia's in this way but have a relationship with the local main dealer and have bought when they've exhausted all options of finding a specific spec car for me.
Others have told of specific issues on rusting where the main dealer check hasn't been carried out during yr1/yr2 service - something that is difficult to prove after the event if serviced outside the dealer network.
I also can't imagine that they'll not be considering the Arnold Clark super duper paint treatment as a get-out for them.
It'll be interesting to know what reason they come back with0 -

It was an Arnold clark Hyundai dealership I bought it from and it was serviced by them from new, it was apparently the managers company car which was why it never even crossed my mind it wouldn’t be covered.
What would you recommend I ask or say to them to try and get this resolved? It’s the third car I’ve bought from this dealership (before they were Hyundai) and they’ve always been good. Then again I’ve never had any issues so haven’t had to use their after care service.0 -
Was it bought as an Approved Used Hyundai or just another car from Arnold Clark.
If the former then take it to another Hyundai Main Dealer and ask their opinion without mentioning that you've already spoken to AC - also worth taking that bloody great yellow sticker out of the back window so they don't suss it.
If the latter then return to AC and escalate via their complaints procedure. This is all assuming there's no physical damage been done to the car that could have caused this (bike rack, replacement screen, kids sitting on roof etc etc)0 -
I can’t remember if it was an approved used Hyundai or not, I just assumed it was being a Hyundai dealership and less than a year old. Is there any way to find out other than from them?
Sorry to keep asking questions but you’re being so helpful and are giving me some hope I may not end up with an enormous respray bill.0 -

A quick check on the Hyundai website doesn't seem to show any Approved Used cars at Arnold Clark sites :mad:0
