The reason is simple, its to catch SIMPLE people out and get more revenue in. And as its their charge its their rules, don't like it then don't use it

    Plain and simple
But, as I pointed out at the beginning of the thread, the time will come when the SIMPLE people get their say, and Whoops! - life gets more complicated for everybody.

Someone who cannot understand that from 6pm on one day to midnight the next is not 24 hours is in quite an unusual subset of the population
And let's not forget that even that 30hrs is the absolute bare minimum time.

If you're going to wave that around, you have to consider the maximums, too.

If you leave the zone shortly after charging starts at 7am, then you have 17hrs on top of the 24hrs = 41hrs to pay.

Charging is suspended on weekends, so if you enter on a Friday, you have 48hrs from midnight on the day you entered.
Charging is suspended on bank holidays, so if you enter on a Friday, it's 96hrs. 120hrs, if it's the Thursday before the Easter weekend.
Charging is suspended between Christmas and New Year, so it's 192hrs. 264 hours, if you happen to be there on Friday 23rd December.

And that's all plus the 17hrs. So, potentially, you could have 281hrs to pay. Damn near ten times as long as the 30 hour minimum...

I bet that still isn't long enough for some. Sadiq Khan should personally come round to your house to remind you, and to deliver an invoice with 30 day credit terms.

Adrian C, when you visit the TFL website, the highest breadcrumb Driving>Congestion Charge, gives an overview of the congestion charge. This is the page I visited, and it said nothing about a 30 hour window. I did my due diligence, and therefore I am in the right.
Extraordinary processes call for extraordinary notices! To answer your question, 3 days is the correct window for payment, as this allows people from the provinces who are making an unscheduled trip to visit the city of London, stay overnight, return home and use their PC to make the payment. You go on to make a lot of hot air about the limit cases on Christmas Day, which are irrelevant; it's the person who visits at the extreme opposite case who MUST be considered. We live in a democracy!

Treboeth, what can I say? You have a very flimsy relationship with logic, all your statements are assertions, and wrong ones at that.

Tarambor, it is my duty "as a licence holder" to know the highway code, I am under no obligation to know every bylaw from every council - that's why there should be adequate signage on the streets, and the webpage. Indeed, if there is no information on the sign (there isn't, before you start posting pictures you cretins) then I cannot be said to have entered a contract with TFL, and therefore they have no legal recourse to apply the PCN. Contrary to your assertion. There isn't any precedent about how long you have to pay after the fact. You cite two measly examples about tolls, which are a different matter.

John G Jones, very amusing, just to point out, '24hrs later' is often used as a shorthand for 'the following day', which is broadly what the timeframe is, I wasn't trying to be precise. Now get back to voting Brexit and using the free buses.

Farmer Boy, this is brilliant, thanks, you state
"The reason is simple, its to catch SIMPLE people out and get more revenue in. And as its their charge its their rules, don't like it then don't use it. Plain and simple."
This comment shows everyone that even a simpleton like FarmerBoy can see TFL are acting in bad faith, and thankfully we live in a society where that matters. So I'm sure this will soon be corrected.

Aylesbury Duck, you are by far the most sanctimonious respondent on this thread, speculating about people "forgetting" after 30 hrs. What you fail to acknowledge is there is no good reason, be it technological, ethical, or to do with people "forgetting", which would necessitate such a short time window. The whole thing would be fairer with a 3 day period to pay the charge, or at least make the short window known on signs and the internet overview page.

Why, thank you Steve. I'm pleased to receive the award, coming as it does from someone so obviously qualified to judge :T

Then why have you received a penalty?

But it is not three days, it is no good complaining on an internet site where as you have found out you will get completely different views and opinions to yours and people are entitled to post them on an open forum.

You either complain and make your opinions known to TFL or contest the charge and refuse to pay it.

And,,,, yeah, you can't come up with a single reason.
No one here made the rule so they don't have to come up with a reason, once again if you want a reason ask TFL.
