Forty years ago, before the internet or desk-top computers, I worked for HM Customs and Excise at what was effectively the border - in a Midlands town. Goods were sealed into a lorry with a metal customs tag at the place where they were made, or a warehouse, abroad. They drove straight through the physical borders at Calais and Dover or wherever they came into the country, and the seal was examined by the Customs and Excise officer at the destination warehouse. If the seal had been tampered with, there would have been serious trouble. No duty was paid until the goods eventually came out of this Midlands warehouse, as and when required.
I appreciate this exact system would not work for perishables, but with modern technology, something quicker could be arranged, I'm sure.

Interesting. I had never heard this mentioned by JRM Boris etc. But how do you make sure the lorry doesn't offload part of its cargo before getting to the border check?

I'm not sure moving the checks away from the border is the solution since it's the checks and not the border that's the problem.

Isn't that just TIR? If so it's still in widespread use.

I don't think you could guarantee it, but at least the security seal would let you know if anyone had opened, or someone had tried to open it.

? Who said that? I didn't.
So what did "The connection is that Boris, the most likely next PM and a strong advocate of taking back control etc etc etc, has refused to back our ambassador. " mean? Boris is a Leaver; he refuses to back our ambassador; this means...what?
Nor did the user you replied to, who commented on how taking back control means doing whatever the US wants.
Which is patent rubbish; in what sense does being a Leaver entail doing what the US wants?

I still don't understand how checks would be carried out but not at the border. Can someone explain? Is this being done anywhere else? Genuine question.

There are roads where you can cross the border multiple times in 10 minutes. Would these roads be closed?

You guys start to understand know that the EU is deliberately use the Irish border just to keep the UK in the EU, so they could be kept to become cash cow and sub servient of the EU under ECJ. That is the reason why they keep saying the WA will not be opened. They know that Ireland might veto the EU final agreement if the EU insist on Irish border.

Dominic Raab. JRC and people in ERG knows this and use it to turn for the UK advantage.

Keep in mind in No deal Brexit, Ireland will suffer the most obviously, as they will be isolated. 85% of their import export depend on the UK ports.

Reality Check: The Brexit challenge for Irish trade

Moreover, to substitute 85% of the port you rely on for your export import in a very short time is unthinkable if you will have a headline deficit in the region of -0.5 percent to -1.5 percent of GDP.

“Under the disorderly Brexit scenario, this could involve a headline deficit in the region of 0.5 percent to -1.5 percent of GDP for the next year, depending on the magnitude of the economic shock.

@westernpromise, one of us struggles to understand basic English.

I never said Trump did what he did because Boris is a Brexiter. I was pointing out the inconsistency between Boris' rethoric about taking back control, and his actions, ie his failure to back the ambassador, which in my view means bowing to the US, ie the exact opposite of taking back control.

This is at least the third time I explain it. If you cannot comprehend this concept this time either, so be it - I am not sure I can explain it any differently.

ie his failure to back the ambassador,

Whatever the ins and outs. The guy is no acceptable or welcome in the US. That's the reality of these high level civil service jobs.

More the concern is the leaking of confidential information. Private views and discussions are just that.

Problem is, emails are generally insecure. Perhaps these sort of comments should be directly scrambled by the ambassador and descrambled only by the relevant top person at the FO. It would at least reduce the number of eyes looking at the message chain.

I agree with you but so what?
He’s done worse and just gets away with it.
This only adds one more blunder to the list, so why will it make any difference.
What he did to Zagahri-ratcliffe was far worse than ruining a career but the guy is made of Teflon, nothing sticks.
