I think Keir Starmer is the man to lead Labour. The sooner the better.

Blairite, completely unacceptable to the Labour membership. Will never happen.

I am not saying she is perfect as an MP or an orator but the "gaffes" she makes are no worse than any other white male politician with a plummy accent. The difference is that they are forgotten whereas Abbott's are still being talked about years later.

Apparently, of all of the cases of abuse towards MP's reported, Abbot is on the receiving end of about half of them. Out of 650 MPs. I honestly doubt she'd get close to the same number if she was a white male.

What I don't understand is why the right wing are so scared of her. Corbyn I can understand.

I think it's infuriated rather than scared (they're terrified of Corbyn). Woman, black, educated, more capable than they are, looks and sounds lefty, almost unanimously supported by a constituency composed of people they hate.

The thing which sends them almost over the edge about Abbott (other than her refusal to go away) is that she is unapologetic about representing people like her.

You are allowed to be an ethnic minority politician on the Right, but only if you dress, sound like and look like your only burning ambition is to represent wealthy white men in North East Hampshire.

Much of the "laughing stock" axiom about Abbott is down to uninterrogated racism with a nice side serving of misogyny. The Abbott haters are often saying more about themselves than they are about Diane Abbott.

    Absolutely not.
I’m female and would like to support good women but ONLY on merit.
I’m also from a mixed race family.
I think she’s a laughing stock purely on merit and it’s a shame we still can’t judge people purely on merit and the content of their character without gender and colour being brought into it.

Boris Johnson is a joke as well but I’m judging him on merit and his actions not his gender or colour.

I Know those things don’t even occur to me and I can tell you why.
When I taught my broether to drive (I was 19 and he was 17) I had my hand on his on the gearstick.
I was surprised to see his hand was a different colour to mine, because I no longer SAW the difference in colour. That’s how I KNOW the colour of someone’s skin is something I see past.

Being academically cleaver is not the single requirement for being a good MP.
    Harold shipman was clever.

I wish people would cut out the ageism (both ways). There are clever and stupid people of all ages – and everything in between – and life experience counts as both a positive and a negative. Often the wisdom of old age can be cancelled out by resistance to change and bitterness.

I agree. The wisdom of my age tells me that Brexit is the worst mistake this country will have ever made. But that does not mean older people in general are as wise as me.:)

Corbyn is happy to meet with leaders of Sinn Fein or Hezbollah. Yet cannot act in a grown up way on behalf of the country he purports to represent.

Sends his clueless lackey onto BBC's Question Time. Dianne Abbott negotiating with the EU. The thought sends shivers down my spine.

I agree Corbyn is playing games by not engaging but the other parties also seem to want to rule out no deal. I think Corbyn's stance is more to do with the fact that he realizes that whatever he says to her she will not change her views.

Latest madness is that she wants to re-write the Good Friday Agreement. Corbyn is dangerous because of what he wants to do. May is just as dangerous for her refusal to listen or chanhge her mind. She just wants to do deals with those in her own party.

I tend to agree. But the media and the establishment have ways of discrediting people they fear. Michael Foot for example.

Abbot is far from perfect but for some her gender and colour are all they need to criticize her words.

In your opinion. He's made it clear he's happy to engage in discussions if the destructive no deal is taken off the table and the money put to something useful, and that seems perfectly fair.

As is his offer for May to stand down and let him run it. Why should he do anything else? He's the opposition leader and the Tory whipping boy.

As the Withdrawal Act stipulates that we leave on the 29th March, if a deal hasn’t been struck by that time, we leave without a deal. That is the law that the vast majority of MPs enacted. No deal can't be taken off the table unless Article 50 is revoked.

Why does Corby not understand that very simple fact? He couldn’t possibly be playing politics, could he?

Yes, 498 voted in favour of starting the process vs 114 who were opposed. Let's see if they really think they will all keep their precious seats if they try to frustrate what they themselves voted for.

I thought this was an interesting opinion piece about careful misuse of truth. I'm sure there's an equivalent one about Remainers out there somewhere.
