Brexit the economy and house prices part 7: Brexit Harder
Comments

From the Brexiteer's handbook, 2017:
Brexit slur #389/14-ab. 'Accuse anyone who doesn't support Brexit of being anti-British and demand they leave the country immediately to live with foreigners if they love them so much.'
If this fails to have the desired effect move immediately to:
Brexit slur #214/3d. 'Accuse Remoaner of being a Remoaner and insist that they are ruining Brexit and the main reason it is an enormous disaster is due to them and their Remoaning friends not getting behind Britain, because they hate the UK and are traitors.'
.
Whilst doing this, don't forget to wave your little British flag furiously, pretend that you had anything at all to do with WW2 and try to believe that the likes of JRM and BoJo wouldn't just step over your frozen body in the street.0 -
Of course, we can send our mighty navy, the world's 32nd most powerful, inbetween the powerhouse of Qatar at 31 and the behemoth of the UAE at 33 in sheer firepower, and that will send the Spaniards scurrying back to... wherever Brexiters thinks Spaniards live. Trees probably.

(and the mere trade deal with the EU is about 20 million British people being able to make ends meet each month, in case that has passed you by.)
That’s an interesting list you quote, so you would claim that the North Korean Navy as number one on the list is the Worlds most powerful Navy?0 -

It strikes me that with your general attitude you should really move somewhere more to your liking.
There'll be a wave of Nationalism this summer. One suspects that the tone of the EU is going to get hotter. Must be fed up with the UK wasting their time. People here are likewise totally hacked off with the political establishment. Even Corbyn has sold his soul and principles to remain in power. Momementum rules the Labour party. Not helpfull for all those MP's in leave areas.0 -

I agree that the British population is becoming more nationalist. I can't remember a time in my life when I've heard so many people come out with so much brainwashed nonsense. I thought the slow death of the tabloid press may have weakened this, but unfortunately not.
But sooner or later people will realise that 'sovereignty' doesn't pay the mortgage or put petrol in their car.0 -
It looks like Barmier is beginning to realise that a compromise is needed if the EU aren't to see a no-deal Brexit ..... and the possible loss of their much-needed £39 billion.“We know that there are misgivings in Britain that the backstop could keep Britain forever connected to the EU,” Michel Barnier said in an interview with Germany’s Die Welt newspaper to be published on Saturday.
“This is not the case. And we are ready to give further guarantees, assurances and clarifications that the backstop should only be temporary.”0 -
Maybe the easing-up on the backstop is because the Germans are saying this?Britain could face an EU legal challenge if it seeks to delay Brexit because of the impact on EU legislative elections, a legal opinion produced for Germany’s Bundestag said, potentially making it difficult for Berlin to back anything but a short extension.
So there you have it; any delay to the UK leaving would have to expire before the EU Parliament elections in May - and that's as well as there needing to be a good enough reason.0 -

So the arch-brexiteers may have an extra 2 months to come up with a solution to something that they should have been planning for 40 years?0 -

If you are, how do you explain the same rise in nationalism across other EU member countries?
After all Austria has a nationalist party in power as do Poland, Hungary and others.
Then they're rising in Germany, Italy, France etc. too so I would love to hear how you think those too have been "brainwashed" into their beliefs.
Or does it really never occur to you that - just maybe - it's a reaction to the (possibly perceived) multiple failures of the EU?0 -

I see a lot of such similar comments.
You need to understand that it's not the UK that needs a solution, it's the EU.
The UK can just leave you know.
If the EU really want their £39 billion, a deal will be reached.0 -
You might be right.

Agreed their is a rise in populism / nationalism across Europe and the USA.
But I think the situation in Poland / Hungary is quite different to the UK.
One of the main reasons for the Brexit vote was increased immigration of Eastern European workers into the UK following EU expansion eastwards.
I don't think Central / Eastern European states (such as Poland) have had such immigration. In fact, many places in Poland (especially the smaller towns) have suffered from depopulation.
It's true that many CEE voters are fearful of the EU forcing them to accept refugees from the Middle East etc. But this is a theoretical problem as the numbers of such refugees are tiny.
So I'm not sure what is fueling the populism in Eastern Europe. Do you know?0
