You are looking into the wrong statistics.
Military power is not only about Navy Ships.

    From your own link:
It [the UK] has a regular force of only about 205,000, along with a small air force of 908 aircraft, and an even smaller navy of 66 ships. However, the army of the UK is still a powerful one, with its superior training, equipment and its 160 nuclear weapons being the main strengths.

Yes I see, as long as we're going to nuke the EU we'll come out top.

What a load of old nonsense getting posted here.

    Gibraltar is a listening post.
Spain is a NATO country - but it's not part of 5 Eyes - so the USA won't want Gibraltar changing hands.

Not all NATO countries are viewed by the USA as equally reliable. For example, Turkey causes the USA regular problems - but on balance is better kept within NATO - so its activities are tolerated.

That's the whole point of the backstop though - if we can't ensure a borderless system we are stuck until we solve it one way or another. It'd be a pointless backstop if we could just drop it after some time period*.

If you want the backstop to end, prove to the EU that it's not needed.

*Naturally, we could end it by going full WTO and putting up a hard border, or by rejoining the single market. So it's not as if we're completely stuck honouring the terms we agreed to.

Another way is for Ireland to unite and make the EU border the sea.

However difficult that sounds it might be the least difficult option for the Brexiters to stomach.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

You think the U.K. will cede part sovereignty of Gibraltar as part of a mere trade deal with the EU?
You don’t know your own country very well.

I am not sure anyone knows Britain anymore.

As they say in the financial world.

Past performance has no bearing on future performance.

    Talking of Spain .....

    https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-spain/spain-to-give-400000-britons-residency-in-event-of-hard-brexit-deal-el-pais-idUKKCN1QI4HW

It has nothing to do with the possible financial impact to Spain of 400,000 wealthy retirees leaving en masse of course, they already have enough empty towns & airports.
    :D

It has everything to do with trying to look after the interests of British citizens who moved to Spain under freedom of movement.
It might also mean that the many Brits living under the radar will have to start paying tax, insuring their British plated car and getting health insurance rather than using the EHIC card.
It is also nice to know that Spain does not have a policy towards illegal immigrants that has “Hostile environment” in its title.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

Yeah, you'll be the first to volunteer?

    Thought not.

You proferred the ridiculous idea of two NATO allies engaging in a naval skirmish over Gibraltar and then tell me I’d not volunteer to help fight in that unbelievable situation, too right any professional military that requires the help of a 53 year old Prison Officer is not any military that I’d want to be part of. :)
You OK Arky, you seem a bit fraught.

Don't worry, we all understand the exact reason why YOU voted to leave.

No you don't. You haven't the faintest idea why I voted to leave. You are just a simplistic type who thinks that leavers are racists and xenophobes because your imagination doesn’t extend any further. It comes through clearly in every post you make.

It doesn't seem that Brexiters want to be on the sharp end of any of the consequences of their vote to leave the EU.

At 53 you are on the younger end of the Brexit demographic. A group which, largely, is a lot of old people voting for a giant mess to be inflicted on younger people who then have to think of a way to clear it up.

Nevertheless, of course there isn't going to be a war over Gibraltar. It will go the same way as Scotland, Northern Ireland, and our car industry.

Arklight, why are you so desperately anti British?

It strikes me that with your general attitude you should really move somewhere more to your liking.

    From the Brexiteer's handbook, 2017:

Brexit slur #389/14-ab. 'Accuse anyone who doesn't support Brexit of being anti-British and demand they leave the country immediately to live with foreigners if they love them so much.'

If this fails to have the desired effect move immediately to:

Brexit slur #214/3d. 'Accuse Remoaner of being a Remoaner and insist that they are ruining Brexit and the main reason it is an enormous disaster is due to them and their Remoaning friends not getting behind Britain, because they hate the UK and are traitors.'

Repeat for approximately 5 years and then pretend you never voted for Brexit anyway.
