That summarises the dilemma faced by this thread's posters.

For some years I have based my SA submissions on payments received and cleared. That saves all the effort of trying to get tax certificates from the institutions and removes the errors in such documents from landing me in the soup. The only time I use up any energy is in flagging up when an institution is deliberately mis-informing HMRC - only one so far this year.
My initial impression of the above P60 saga was that it was a case of employer providing employee with erroneous info, but that doesn't actually seem to be the case, unless it can be demonstrated that the employer never supplied the mid-year P45 and failed to inform the employee of what was going on with the payroll changes.

However, are you aware of cases where there has been employer error (or bank error) leading to taxpayers under-declaring to HMRC and being penalised, unfairly or otherwise?

I was the subject of such an event - it was I think now just over 25 years or more ago - way before SA arrived.
    Same result
The P60 was wrong - not by much so I never noticed, and as to why it was printed incorrectly I never found out.
I submitted the data based on the P60.
    Same result
I was responsible for checking that the summary data (P60) accurately reflected reality.
so I got the penalties plus the back tax due.
    They were not significant/large amounts.

I'm trying to avoid this thread being diverted away from my original intent of demonstrating how relying on others' data - even HMRC's data - being correct is a foolish assumption.

Many - two in my own affairs. In one case an FTT cancelled all penalties in the face of masses of documentation from my side. In the other case, a case that would probably have gone to FTT, HMRC was stopped in its tracks by a very lateral approach, viz:

How can I have owed you so many thousands of pounds for so many years without you having taken any steps to recover the alleged debt?

    Collapse of stout tax inspector.

Whose name, incidentally, Was Mister I. Swindell

    Born to the job...:)
  • May I ask how long HMRC took to provide a substantive response, rather than a holding one, to your dad's & husband's complaints?

My husband sent his complaint in and it was received by HMRC on the 2nd September. He hadn't heard from HMRC even though chased via live chat and so completed a online complaint on the 7th October. He still hadn't received any response until the final letter came that was dated the 1st November.

Even then the complaint handler hadn't resolved the issue as they had said about the closures not being actioned before and apologised for the omissions, but then didn't even close the account themselves so he had to contact HMRC again to rectify this. Hence another complaint on it's way.

The complaint handler also said that my husband had expected a response earlier than their 16 working days, which was untrue as he had left 18 working days before submitting the online complaint and that was after they didn't even start work on the original complaint until the 13th September.

My dad had completed an online complaint 1st on the 6th October explaining what had happened and asked for HMRC to provide the complaint handlers name so he could send the written complaint to (after all the problems my husband had had). He hadn't had a response after 2 weeks so got the name via live chat and sent his letter on the 30th October. He received his 1st contact from HMRC on the 5th November.

Today when I spoke to HMRC they were very apologetic and said that they would have my dad's 19/20 tax code corrected by the end of this week and hopefully his 18/19 by next week.

It would appear like anything these days, you get good service from some staff, but not all and they are very inconsistent.

Thanks for the detailed response. I've bookmarked this thread & will gird my loins for battle with my erstwhile employer when I return from Hong Kong next month.

My 2017/18 tax calculation for the untaxed interest is spot on.

    However my 18/19 is wrong.

Also I have not have any letter for 2016/17.

Is anyone got there and is there previous year tax calculation correct?

My issue it that HMRC assumed I would be getting the same amount of interest each year - a bit of a problem when most of my accounts were one year regular savers... This pushed 2019/20 well over the interest allowance on my tax code.
And (of course ) I can’t update or close the ones that paid the most interest (eg Nationwide). Ended up in queue for 20min, but then got it sorted.
One day, this online stuff will actually work!:rotfl:

I have used the link to access individual BS / Banks for the interest they have submitted to HMRC and it worked a treat.
I have tried recently and the link doesn't work.
Is there a time limit during the tax year where this information ceases to be available.
The information submitted by a previous poster, which I have successfully used before is:
Log in to personal tax account. Open new tab and paste https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/check-income-tax/income/bank-buildingsociety-savings and the itemised list is then available.
I have tried on both IE and Chrome.
Is there a time limit or has it changed?
