  • The road to the sea - Ciara Hogarty
Had this book on my shelf for close to ten years and finally decided to read it. Didn't liked it at all, topic and writing style weren't to my taste... Still pulled through though.

    Precious - Precious Williams
At times very funny and sometimes very painful to read. The story of a black girl growing up as a foster child in a white neigbourhood.

    Mobile Library - David Whitehouse
Read it in three days, very enjoyable and gripping with some nice turns in the storyline!

The Forgotten Room - Beatriz Williams, Karen White and Lauren Willing
I wasn't too sure what to expect as the book is written by three authors. But it also goes back and forth between three main characters in three time periods (1892, 1920 and 1944) and I guess each one wrote one of these parts. I can't wait to see how these stories come together in the end (I'm a bit more than halfway in) and it is easy to keep track of the three seperate story lines.

My Mums eye sight is failing, and i wondered about the Audible books or anything similar. Any i should stay clear from?

Hubby, who would never sit down & read a book, constantly listens to books & in fairness audible does have the latest books.

The only thing I've found with audio books is that the narrator makes or breaks it.

The paying guests - Sarah Waters

    Really good read.

    Entertaining Eric - Maureen Wells
The letters of a young woman in WWII to her fiance who was in the Middle East without home leave for almost 4 years. Very funny read as she has done a lot of interessting things during the war and also a nice insight into life at war.

The light years - Elizabeth Jane Howard
One of these books where nothing really seems to happen and it can get a tad boring at times, but still a nice insight in life in the 1930ies and when you look back at the end of the book well, a lot has happened. A lot like real life where weeks and months just go by and dont' seem special and when you look back they weren't that boring as you thought that moment.

    101 Dalmatians - Dodie Smith
101 Dalmatians is my favourite Disney movie and I thought I should also read the book. I cried for most of it as it was just soo cute although it got a bit too Si-Fi for me in the end.

    The Silence of the Girls.

By Pat Barker, this is an an engrossing story of the Trojan Wars from the women's point of view.

    Mansfield Park
Jane Austen's gossipy tale of manoeuvres towards matrimony. Less refined than her other books and plenty of chuckles.

Am struggling a bit with this book as most of the experiences especially the other passenger encounters are so completely negative. Have done most of the train trips myself so far and my experience was completely different. Also a shame is the trips themselves are very sparsely described. Wasn’t expecting Paul Theroux but disappointing so far!

Its been ages since I last looked at this thread, but many books have been read in that time!

    Book 8:

8/10. I really liked this book, which was entertaining and informative in its own way. Rather than just being about his own experiences as an immigrant, he also looked at why different groups have different perceptions of England. Parts were very eye-opening.

Hope is not a strategy :D...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!
  • Well after a long time not reading, I've read two books in three weeks and I must admit I enjoyed them both.

Firstly I read Vox by Christina Dalcher which is about an America where women can only say 100 words a day, can't go out to work & have to stay home looking after the family....you get the picture.

I've also read Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty which is about nine people who go to a heath spa which has some unorthodox treatments.

Am re-reading - Nella Last's diaries - Housewife 49. Her Mass Observation Diaries from World War 2 and reminding myself how fortunate we are to live in a world of plenty again without rationing. Also, despite the feminist's cry today, how far we have advanced since those days when a woman's role was expected to be a stay at home housewife , have her husband's meal waiting on the table for him the moment he arrived home from work, to be subject to his every whim and command, and never have any independent money of her own.
  • Finished this today ......was ok written from the perspective of the main character, her daughter and the police officer assigned to the murders which was a bit tedious on occasions as they all seemed to narrate the same events.

The ending seemed rushed though as if the author was bored herself of the novel.

    5/10

Just finished reading "JFK - The Smoking Gun" written by Colin MCClaren, a highly regarded retired police officer with huge experience of examining forensic evidence who was fascinated about the various theories around the origin of the second bullet which killed President Kennedy and the conspiracies which surrounded his death.

Whilstst not revealing his conclusions, his conclusions have certainly caused me to look upon the authorities who investigated the evidence in a whole new light.
