The ESA webpage https://www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance/what-youll-get now includes the following note
If your ESA payment is due in the week starting 7 January 2019, you might be paid half of it early in the week starting 31 December 2018. The other half of your payment will be paid on the correct day. Your next fortnightly ESA payment will be paid as normal.

I too have received half of my fortnightly payment today. It was paid on time on the 28th December and then I was expecting it on the 11th. However, I can remember this happening a few years before and I was told that it was indeed to help over the New Year period. I couldn’t really understand as does this not mean that they will be catching up for the rest of the year. It is worrying when things change and I’m always nervous about calling them but I know I’m entitled to my payments. I agree that it would make sense that they inform us when they send the letter out about the Christmas bonus payment.

It's not to help over the New Year period. It's a computer error and nothing more. The rest of your payment will be received on the correct date. After that payments will return to normal.
  • Me too, was concerned but assumed it was the day the dates fell on over Christmas . Has anyone rung up DWP?

Lots of people have already reported their conversations with the DWP in this thread. Please see the official DWP notice as posted by me earlier at post #43.
