  • What's crazy is that you cannot see that it makes no difference whatsoever to the amount of daylight. It's just a number on a clockface - the sun will rise and set at the same "time" regardless, and people are free to use the light as they choose.
It's just unbelievable that anyone still believes there is any "saving" to be made.

It's just a superstition, like believing in Smart Meters or Father Christmas. :)

Perhaps you are up and about at 3am walking your dog in the closed parks, sitting in your garden, watching a cricket or other outdoor sporting event or attending a concert - and safely in bed by 8pm from May to July.

Most of us aren't - so daylight is more useful at 9pm than 3am! Not just in terms of the ability to enjoy evening sunshine after work but also in terms of the huge electricity savings from everyone switching their lights on an hour later.

So while I accept your point we should all be flexible - it really does make a difference in the summer.

There are savings to be made in terms of lives e.g. Road Traffic Accidents.

Many people are not free to go to work/school at times that suit them.

Isn't there an issue with the building trade working 8-4 being slightly staggered vs the 'norm' 9-5 whereas with no GMT in the winter this would not be possible?
    I think....

But one trade changing their hours isn’t the end of the world if it means less school kids killed on the roads is it?

The issue being that currently that they (well actually everyone else) is travelling at a slightly different time whereas with the hour change either everyone else would have to change to working 10-6 or builders and everyone else would be on the roads at the same time causing even more congestion.
    I think....

What I don't understand is that the clock change dates are not symettrical with the equinox dates:

In 2018 we changed forward on Sunday 25 March, pretty much at the equinox

But we changed back on Sunday 28 October more than a month after the equinox.

Often thought that they could move the 'good change' (when clocks are brought forward, I think.) to a Monday morning to enable an extra hour in bed on a working day :)

It's just arbitrary numbers, they can shift their start time based on daylight without the whole country changing.

Because British employers are known for their flexibility.

At least with changing everyones clocks you aren't going to end up with different arbitrary rules being implemented by different employers.

For six months of the year you may have to pay more for your train ticket as you'll be travelling at peak times etc, or won't be able to park while you're at work because of parking restrictions before 9am etc.

I used to be anti clock changes, but in retrospect I think we would be way worse off.
  • I see the rationale in changing the clocks, but I would be happier if it were mid-November when they went back and early March when they went forward, as the sunrise is before 7am and sets at almost 6pm by 28 Feb.
