Thanks for the new thread elsiepac :)

My target to beat this month is Decembers Spend - £278.61

I'm going to keep trying to beat each month's spend throughout the year, until I've taken it as far as I can.

That's a good idea, never thought of trying to beat the previous month. Maybe that way I would get beyond my £200 I set myself.

Asked OH to pick up a couple of bits when he goes to Sainsburys for fuel, but not counting them from my budget...he is paying for them anyway, as they are for medicinal purposes as I have a bad chest infection/boarder line pneumonia and need more honey, tissues, paracetomol, and ginger t bags.

So I can safely say that I am still on £0/£200. We have plenty left in the freezer/fridge and cupboards to live on for a while anyway as I am hardly eating anything. Will do a proper reccy and see what we need soon as I feel a bit better

Thanks ploppy57 - I sometimes find if I have a budget I want to spend up to it if that makes sense, this way I’m still trying to get it lower :)

  • Hello!

I haven't posted for years (& even then, very rarely) but I do lurk quite often. Started a new budget a few months ago &, whilst it's generally going ok, I think I could still make some adjustments. So, with that in mind, can I join you all please? My household budget runs weekly & I think £50 per weekshould be doable. I'd like to get this down to £40 but I'll stick with £50 for now & see how we go. Two adults, two kids & one dog.

    Thank you!

You must give us your tips to keep your budget that low for a family of 4 and a dog. That will be amazing if you can do it. Good luck.

I'm in for £180 this month. Not sure how it'll go.

Things that will help: a decently stocked dry goods cupboard and freezer, a husband who works in Belfast Mon-Thurs at the moment, a child who gets hot school meals.

Things that won't help: hosting book club on Tues and having a party next Friday. I want to pull this off within the budget!

    Book club:
I will buy one bottle of red and white for the book club, and two sharing bags of crisps. One or two ladies usually bring a bottle and no one ever really eats much!

    Party:
Invited some neighbours round for 'drinks and chilli'. I will make a huge pot of bean chilli (to serve 12) and serve with rice, value tortillas (I think these are the best!), salsa and homemade guacamole. So my shopping list will be: 6 sweet potatoes, 6 red peppers, 3 yellow peppers, 3 tins cannelini beans, 3 tins chopped toms, 3 packs tortilla chips, 4 avocados, 2 big fresh tomatoes, coriander, 2 jars salsa.

I think this will be cheaper - and healthier - than nibbles.

I have in stock: four bottles of prosecco, two bottles of vodka, two bottles of gin, and various other cocktail makings.

I was thinking we might get away with buying a box of red (~£15), ginger beer and limes and serving big jugs of Moscow Mules to try and use up the vodka. People usually bring what they need to drink.

Assuming that all entertaining takes £80 of my budget, that leaves £100 for groceries and cat food. I think if I'm creative, and use up some of our stocks, I can just about manage!!
  • @Wentthedaywell or anyone else, where is that "Save £12k in 2019" saving thread located, please? I think I’d like join.

I thought I'd posted this earlier but it seems to have disappeared. Maybe it'll turn up on the wrong thread! :o

    Here is the link Jings:

    Hello All,

Just totalled up my first grocery spends of 2019:

Medical: £3.50 on sore throat and cough lozenges

I will be spending again on Friday for my veg/fruit box.

Tomorrow, I will do a food inventory and menu plan.

Aww...is it dumplings for tea? Not made them for years. Good comfort food. Might have to have a go at making some soon.
