Can I be told to come in early?

If that is your stance, what are you making a big issue about? Do not agree to it, job done, you have already said he is not in a position to change your shifts.
Quite agree. And when OP wants to come in late our leave early for a dentist or GP appointment, the manager can equally say no. As well as dictating when they can and can't take leave etc.Originally Posted by shortcrust

Don't bother going in at all. That should sort it...
I suspect the whole 'come in between 8 and 9, leave between 4 and 5' had to be changed to 'come in at 8.30 and leave at 4.30' because you were coming in at 9 and leaving at 4. Could be wrong of course. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
@trailingspouse I’m not sure why are you jumping way of the gun, but no I wasn’t leaving work an hour early. It was suggested by other members of staff that I work until 5pm as there is the option and as there is just one compulsory staff for 30 mins it would benefit them.0

@nicechap the senior staff/management stick within company policy with regards to medical appointments. They can’t make their own rules. And yes a company can dictate leave and so what? It’s a small team, if people see I’m treated unfairly it will reflect badly on him. As my leave is all booked until the end of the year and no one else is off on the times I’ve booked.... cancelling my leave wouldn’t be an option and I would take it to my higher manager. The rule is no more then 3 members of staff can be off, of a team of 7.0

@getmore4less yes that’s what I did. I just don’t know how to act on Monday when/if he brings it up. I am also new to working so I’m not sure what the laws/status quo is0

And therein lies your problems. You think you know your rights but you don't.
Good luck, you'll need it.Originally Posted by shortcrust

The OP should stop trying to come up with feeble excuses to support the reasons for not wanting to start early. The options are really very simple - either start early and finish early or just wander in at the normal time. There may or may not be longer term repercussions by refusing to come in early. For example, the OP may ask to go early one day and the boss remember just how flexible the OP was when the situation was reversed.0

@farmerJohnson I’m a nightmare employee? Are you sure about that?
Because if I started a thread saying that I expect to come in early and leave early, despite operating hours (phone lines open) at x time you would therefore call he entitled and a nightmare employee. I’m simply asking to come in at my usual time because it actually suits the company to have employees available when the phone lines are open. My boss is either miss communicating what he wants or what benefit he is supposedly giving me. Had he wanted me to work until 5pm I would have been more then willing to work - because I don’t give two f**ks about Xmas eve but being in my bed is more important.0 -
Sounds like a priority issue0
