@les I have read my contract and it says nothing about start/finish times, just that I work certain hours. So where do I go from here?0

I also don’t sleep as well in the winter and generally feel more tired. Probably suffer from SAD but that’s another story.
Come on now, dark mornings can not be described as terrible weather, by no stretch of the imagination :rotfl:
I hate driving in the dark, and where I live and work, its pure black dark as we don't have street lighting, but I have no option in the winter months as it doesnt get light here much before 9
If I didn't drive in the dark, Id be unemployable0 -

You are free to resign and find employment more to your liking.
Or start your own business and employ people and see how you get on.Originally Posted by shortcrust

I am so, so thankful that I work with sensible, diligent professionals who understand that a bit of give and take makes everyone’s life easier.
OP, I agree, you come across as a nightmare employee, and I really feel for your boss and colleagues. He’s asking for some flexibility so that people can get back to their families early on Christmas Eve, and rather than be happy to help you are on here moaning.0 -

Perhaps you need to migrate to the southern hemisphere during the UK winter, because everyone who works full time has to travel either to or from work in the dark at this time of year, and many people have to do both.0 -
If they're closing early (which yes, they can do) you probably have the option with your bosses agreement (and I'm unclear on why you think he isn't your boss just because he can't hire people) of agreeing the change or owing the time back.
Do you really expect the workplace to stay open just for you if everyone is finishing early?
It's an hour. It's not the end of the world. And I do get the sense you're digging your heels in just because it's coming from your boss. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Its still dark at 8am so getting up any earlier is not going to affect how everything looks out of your window when you wake up.
Its also one day out of 365 because of Christmas.
You will also probably be going home while it is still light which is something that could not be said if you working until 4.30.
Im not saying you are wrong to be unhappy, but it is one day. It is hardly the end of the world and it feels to me like you are making a mountain out of a molehill. I used to do 12-8 and loved it, I got a lie in, went to the gym before work, miss rush hour traffic and get home and my tea would be ready or if it was a friday, I was in town ready to go straight out, I did not have to go home to come back out. Every now and again I would be asked to do a 9-5 shift and I hated it - mainly because I had to be in work for a time I used to wake up at.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. ACG it’s one day and there is no need for me to come in early. I am 100% fine with working my full hours so my boss shouldn’t expect me to want to come and expect me to come in early without agreement.0

If that is your stance, what are you making a big issue about? Do not agree to it, job done, you have already said he is not in a position to change your shifts.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. "great I will see what I can do and come in as early as I can"0
