all very sensible - whilst disappointing to change your objectives it is absolutely the right thing to do. and a model I may follow when I stop paying off CC early next yearI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

We offered our girl £10 for each 7 grade and above!!? Feeling tight now 😱😂 but this was offered back at the beginning of the year. She is a clever kid in an improving school in not the best catchment, so we expecting tears tbh. As long as her photography is a 7/8, and she passed the rest (her btec is a M2 as already finished, which is a high 6, low 7, approx a B in old grades) then in the long run it doesn't impact her future. But will massively impact her mental health which isn't the best after 5months of doing nothing, and no chance of a part time job.
She has asked to go to mcd's for tea after, as that's her favourite. We are booked to eat out at a local restaurant on the 24th with the eating out deal, but that's it.
Good luck to your daughter.Debt free Feb 2021 🎉7 -
My DGS is in the same position as your daughter. Improving school, poor catchment area etc. He's been doing really well at maths and physics and got A*s in his mocks. I'm dreading Thursday and hoping for all our kids sakes that the Government follows Scotlands example... but I'm not holding my breath.I Believe.....
That it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I had no concerns until this week. Her school sat two lots of mocks and she pulled up two grades in maths, and scored the highest mark in the entire year for history! Luckily her chosen A levels are only relying on her photography mark, which was completed and is marked in house anyway, and then four others at 4+ including maths and English. But if this ridiculous algorithm is purely random then she could be marked down considerably from 6/7/8 to 3/4!
I also have a year 10 very unacademic child in a good school (they don't go to the same school!) And am concerned about next year's results after nearly 5months out.Debt free Feb 2021 🎉5 -
I find this algorithm thing very disconcerting, I don't understand why they're using the standard of the school and catchment to make any decisions! It should purely be on predicted grades and mocks. My DD goes to a 'good' school within a 'good' catchment and attained good mock grades within her predicted range. If she gets any grades that deviate from that, I'll be very annoyed for herDFD March 2025 (£35000 paid off)

Algorithms reveal the underlying prejudices and bias of those that created them. That's why this algorithm favours privilege and supports the bizarre number crunching in schools for the last decade whilst ignoring social mobility and individual talent. Algorithms also reward those who game them and not those who play a straight bat. I think you should be very annoyed whatever happensI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

I am new to DFW (well I have been snooping since March). I am so impressed with your diary. Your work ethic is amazing given your family commitments too. I have 2 teens and think that's hard enough 😆. I so identify with your DD1 "issues". My DD is the eldest at 19. She too suffered from "middle class teen privilege" from quite an early age. We took it for a while but at 16 we insisted she got a part time job. She did so, and it was a huge turnaround in her attitude to money. She still spends it like it's burning a hole (she is on first name terms with the Hermes delivery man 😆), but at least it is her money. Hopefully your DD will get the job and earn more respect for your efforts. Oddly enough, like your DS1, mine is not bothered about spending. He is happy to wait for birthday or Christmas for anything he wants, and tends to save what he has 🙂. He is also awaiting the fake gcse results and will be getting paid for his efforts. He is very relieved to hear that the government has made a u-turn today and will be using the CAG results rather than the algorithm of doom that has just ruined the A levels.
Anyway, I just wanted to pop by to say hello 👋

I'm very much hoping DD gets the job too, it would do her a lot of good! It's funny how different kids have different attitudes despite being brought up the same. My eldest seems to be the only one like it (so far)... so either the others are naturally less entitled or they've heard the (many) arguments and know not to bother tryingDFD March 2025 (£35000 paid off)
