or anything that needs a 'cure all' power-flush

They will do a sludge related repair gratis, but once advised a flush is required shouldn't do any other sludge repairs. In truth though the system has to be pretty filthy to be much of an issue.

Regarding power-flush, I think sometimes there is a conflict between what is required, and the commission incentive offered to the fitters

I can absolutely guarantee you the commission is absolutely no incentive to miss-sell, I used to frequently refuse to take tips that were larger. There used to be a certain amount of pressure to hit targets but these have been removed for quite a while now and their engineers no longer have any targets to meet.

Have they done their initial inspection yet?

They won't cover anything the consider a pre-existing fault; or anything that needs a 'cure all' power-flush

no. They haven't done any checks yet. I just signed up yesterday. I'll call them in the morning and see when they can come and have a look. Does anyone know if homeserve has to do a check first? Or do you just have to wait for the 14 days to pass?

My renewal quote for British Gas HomeCare 200 was £244. I waited until the day before it expired and rang them up. I told them this was a ridiculous price as their internet price for new customers is £216. After a bit of haggling I was transferred to another adviser who offered me a renewal price on the spot of £195.

So less than ten minutes on an 0800 call saved me nearly fifty quid.

    Hello,

Our boiler broke last night - or so we thought. It basically needed repressurising, which is not something me or my husband had any clue about. So we spent £150 to have a man take one look at the boiler, flip the valves, and then put the cover back on. Entirely our own fault, and a very costly mistake we won't be making again.

    ANYWAY.

The repair man was actually really nice, and did a few other jobs for me whilst he was there to justify his time. I asked if I should be getting the boiler serviced more regularly, but he said that with this type (Alpha CD25X) it wouldn't be worth our while as it is very new and modern. He did say one thing to look out for is the cost of repairs and parts if something does go wrong. He suggested that it would be hard to get insurance for this model as it is so expensive to fix.

I've just done a price comparison and it's apparently only £4, which isn't too bad, but now I'm worried this wouldn't actually cover us enough.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? Would £4 a month be OK?
  • I've had SSE Sheid Flexi for over a year now. So far I've needed nothing but the annual service however this morning I discovered a yellow patch in the lounge ceiling so presumably there is a leaky pipe in the bedroom above.

Phoned SSE but was told they could not send anyone out as the pipe was under the floor. I've looked through my policy and can't see anything that says pipes under floors aren't covered (where else would they expect the pipes to be?), has anyone else had this?

I guess the next step is to make a formal complaint but that's not going to fix the issue, looks like I'm going to have to get someone out in the meantime to take a look and pay for that on top of the cover.

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.
  • Re-read everything to do with the policy and I can't see anything that say's pipes under floors aren't covered. Phoned SSE again and got an even worse response. They now say I have to get someone out to take up the floor and then have one of their engineers come out to fix it and then someone back in to refloor and they will charge a £50 callout for the work. I pointed out that I'd spoken to other companies who will do all of the job and therefore the cover was basically worthless as the cost of fixing the actual leak will probably be less than £50. I then got told if i get someone else in to fix it I wouldn't be covered for any future problems with the heating!

DO NOT USE HOMESERVE - its one of the worst mistakes we could have made.

Previously we were with BG and never had any breakdowns so decided to try Homeserve as they were cheaper at renewal.... and just our luck 6 months later Boiler wouldn't light up.

Call up homeserve to book an appointment and they say you are not covered?????? Which was a surprise....... after paying via DD for 6 months you find out you are not covered just when you need them....

So after inquiring further as to why we are not covered, was told something about recommended repairs that needed to be done....and they have only sent the letter..... YESTERDAY ... hummm how coincidental that they have for 6 months taken money, provided false assurance of Boiler protection and now when you call them, they supposedly have sent a letter asking for some repairs..... why not when at the start of the policy.....?

Anyways after trying to explain to them that if they sent the letter yesterday I wouldnt have recieved it just now unless it was done via special delivery.... and also that i have continued to pay for the policy and they have happily taken my money.......their response was continue to pay but you are not covered and we will not help.....

Have logged a complaint - and asked to cancel my Policy......and will not recommend Homeserve to anyone for their Boiler Cover....

    Further update

Letter received today 11th, but the best bit, the post mark date clearly shows it was posted on10th Feb, so basically even though I was told on Phone they have posted the letter on 7th Feb, this was wrong. Clearly shows how Homeserve will do what it can to avoid covering you.... back to BG or another alternative I guess
