  • I went to uSwitch and found Homeserve are offering boiler cover at 25% discount. The cheapest deal is easypay gas cover at £86/£5.58 month

    cheeeeaaaaaaaap!!!!!!!!
  • What many people fail to realise is that they are paying for the same cover many times over. People who take out Home Emergency Cover (Boiler, central heating, electrics etc) direct from their supplier our through specific warranty/emergency companies may also have FREE home emergency cover through their home insurance policy (many insurers now included this as a FREE option). They may also have FREE home emergency cover as a benefit from their credit card company or their bank account.

It is definately worth checking. I saved £300 a year when I realised that my insurer Hiscox provided the cover I required as part of their 505 policy. I also have similar Home emergency cover from my RBS account but as I do not pay for either that is just a bonus.

    What cover do they provide?

Emergency cover normally means just that - emergency. e.g. a water pipe in your house bursts and they will come out and turn off the water at the main stopcock(if you haven't done so.) Then you get someone in to fix the problem..

Your CH breaking down is not an emergency. You just get cold - plenty of people don't have CH.

Don't know about your specific policy, but I have never seen any 'free' emergency cover that was worth very much.
  • Before taking out drain cover CHECK with your local water company whether YOUR drains are YOUR responsibility or THEIRS !!! Basically if you live in an older house chances are that they are the water companys responsibility and not yours But this is not a hard and fast rule. It all depends when your property was built , whether someone else shares your drains etc etc ,
BUT FOR ONE PHONE CALL AND MAYBE A SITE VISIT YOU COULD SAVE A SMALL FORTUNE IF THEY BECOME BLOCKED ETC .

If you call dyno rod and the like they will not tell you that its not your problem , they simply want your cash so phone the water board first , they often have a drain clearing service which because they have to sort out their own drains it is normally very competitive, plus they have access to all the maps etc of where all the main drains are etc etc .

I know what Im on about as over 15 yrs service in a water co and have been called out many times by desperate people who have had dyno rod out and the like and have paid a fortune without any success and we come along , with the maps , find the right drain , 1 rod and it all flushes away and no charge !!! cos it was the water companys resp !! but dont try to get any refund on money you paid out to the private firm . Your get no where !!!
  • Anyone wanting to stay with BG 200 service contract is best to ring them up just before contract is to expire and threaten to leave as they reduced mine from £18.50 to £16.50 per month. Always been happy with their service and even better saving £24 a year! :j
  • they are going to charge me nearly £300 if I renew this year!:confused:
  • I thought the whole point of paying British Gas to cover my central heating system was that if it broke down they would come and fix it. We've been with them for about 15 years and this morning (Tuesday) the heating stopped working. No problen I thought, so I rang them up to be told they's send someone around on Friday! So much for me thinking they'd come within 24 hours. When I mentioned this to the lady in the call center she said "It says in the small print that adverse weather conditions can affect their service. A lot of people are having to wait until next week". So be warned, if it's Winter you could have a few chilly days if your heating breaks down. If I went to a shop and bought something that didn't do what it was supposed to, I'd take it back and probably get my money back. Wish I could do the same with British Gas. Must go now. Have to find bed socks and hot water bottle and fill every kettle and saucepan in the house for family to get washed in the morning.

In a council house with a boiler 30 years old - covered by British Gas. Recommended last year to replace it as spares hard to come by.....got a condenser boiler put in and continued with the cover. Since Nov 2008 til now - no service visit. Last Friday heating wouldn't start up - so no hot water. Got through to British Gas - no one could come out til following Monday - hubby pointed out we had a kettle for hot water and an electric fire in the living room.....so they said they'd be out on Saturday. Waited in Saturday and then got a call to say, hot water not an emergency, visit would be this coming Friday!. (if we wanted to buy another electric fire they would deduct £30 off our cover payment).
Not well pleased but we wrapped up warm and got on with it.

Sunday - hubby is reading an internet forum where a plumber is saying how half of his visits are to condensor boilders where the pipes have been put outside!....guess who that applies to. Hubbhy being handy sets to with the hair drier and then cuts the pipe whereone the heater starts up and we have hot water. He has since rejoined the pipe.

On telephoning the gas board to say we no longer need a call out - no thanks to them - he queries why they put the pipes outside. Thats the way its done he is told.

Why are we wasting our money getting the house insulated, loft insulated, doubleglazing, long life bulbs, a boiler that is energy efficient - when a basic thing like putting the piping inside the insulated house is not regarded as basic procedure. No point keeping the house warm if the run off water from the condensor boiler is freezing in the outside pipes (and we have about 12ft of it) - effectively cutting off our heating and hot water.

    Hi,
Have been browsing this thread to see which company to use when I renew my boiler insurance.

Am currently without water/heating (its January!!!!) and have been since last Tuesday night, its now Monday so almost a week, and I currently have Bronchitis! One 'engineer' didn't bother ringing to check I was in (I am currently staying at friends), the helpline (??) takes about 20minutes to get through to a real person and even then they havn't been very helpful. One of them told me on Friday I would have to wait till Tuesday just to get it assessed. Eventually after 1 1/2 hours on the phone, trying managers, supervisors & various staff members they arranged for Npower to come round and am now waiting for a part to be delivered so the boiler can be fixed. I will be putting in a complaint.

    So which company is best?
Looking at British gas (they don't sound too good from this thread)
    Evergreen heating
    Directline
    Homecall plus

Looked at Npower too but they deal with the dreaded Homeserve...

    Any advice gratefully recieved

I live in a new house which is just coming to the end of its 2 year warranty period so starting to think about what level of boiler cover I should have. Have a gas condensing boiler which I am told should be serviced ever year (it hasn't), and when the house builder's plumbing company came out just to fix a couple of little issues (as I said just making sure all sorted before my warranty finishes) asked him what he recommended. He reckons British Gas as it includes an annual service which normally costs around £70. Just done a quick quote and its coming out at £10.50 a month for boiler cover including an annual service. Couple of questions - when would the annual service be completed (at the start of the agreement or at the end)?, is there any point spending an extra £2 a month for the full heating cover (its a new house), and does this deal represent pretty good value for money considering it includes the annual service? Can go via quidco to get £40 off so tempted at the moment....
