Passengers at one of the UK's busiest airports have been warned to expect further flight disruption after drones were seen over the airfield.

Gatwick's runway remains closed after two of the devices were seen nearby, sparking a string of delays and diversions on Wednesday evening.

Outbound flights were grounded and incoming planes redirected - with some landing in Paris and Amsterdam.

Passengers due to travel have been told to check the status of their flight.
The shutdown started just after 21:00 GMT, when two drones were spotted being flown over the airfield.

"Multiple reports" of further sightings followed, a Gatwick spokesman said, and all flights to and from the airport were suspended.

The runway was briefly re-opened at about 03:01, the airport said, but forced to close again about 45 minutes later amid "a further sighting of drones".

This isn't linked, in some way, by any chance with the group that are trying to stop deportations?
  • As of 11.00 AM all flights in and out of Gatwick remain suspended.

It will be a concern to the authorities that something so easily obtained and capable of being used remotely from a distance can cause so much disruption. We dont know the motivation of those at Gatwick today but its not hard to speculate that others will have seen and learned from the chaos that has been caused.

Utter chaos at Gatwick - most ground staff trying to help, but had no information to give.

Sadly our Christmas / New Year family trip to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon looks like being binned because of it, flight was lunchtime today, now cancelled and the only replacement flight they can book us on is in January, on the day we're also coming back again... :(
  • Gatwick latest:

All flights to and from Gatwick are cancelled at least until 16.00 this afternoon.

If you are due to fly today or are meeting someone from a flight, please do not travel to the airport without checking the status of your flight with your airline first.

These drones - when was the last confirmed sighting ?
Surely - hawks/eagles should be brought in to deal with them ?

apparently , everytime they think of opening the runway another drone is seen, I also heard they have tried to get near to it with another drone but it evades them
