If I was beginning share dealing today the one thing I would do differently is - I would make sure that I use up my S&S Isa allowance each year.
I regretted not doing that sooner when you have been fortunate enough to buy shares that have gone on to be 5 and 10 baggers then CGT is a pain (a nice pain but one that is avoidable!) but there is no CGT when you buy and sell shares through your S&S Isa.Never let the perfume of the premium overpower the odour of the risk0 -

I totally agree. My mid January, my capital gains for this tax year had reached £10,560 on 10 shares that I bought for £34K (and sold for £44k).
I'm currently avoiding selling any more shares until after 6 April.
Its a nice problem to have, but I'm going to fully use my ISA allowance now, and transfer shares across from my main portfolio to my S&S ISA each year.0 -

It's a shame you can't actually transfer shares across into ISAs in the way that you say, I'd rather stay with some of the shares I hold; but instead I shall probably have to sell at the 'wrong' time in order to utilise my annual allowance. Even so, unless they put the allowance up or I'm very creative, it's going to take me another five years.0 -
The FTSE is getting very peaky again, getting up above 6800. It has never returned to the 6990 it achieved in December 1999. It has only managed to reach around 6840 since then before crashing back down. Is it going to finally get back up there again now?0

Been interesting seeing the market reaction to the slightest hint of bad news, particularly in some of the Blue Sky stocks over the last few weeks. It does remind me a bit on just before the last correction but I'm no expert, just an observer!
Surely there are far too many companies out there now with such an inflated value that something has to give?0 -
It has never returned to the 6990 it achieved in December 1999
This is a fallacy. To measure the value 1999 and now, we have to include value of Sterling which of course declines every year.
Also a big factor is the dividends paid out each year.
So have we got past 1999 in value yes, as a plain number no but that doesnt mean anything0 -
I would have thought you would have to include inflation which devalues all currencies. So a figure of 6990 in December 1999 would be worth a lot more than the same figure for the FTSE today.
To say that sterling is continually devaluing is assuming all other currencies are automatically increasing in value against sterling.0 -
Its an inaccuracy either way. So the whole thing is deceptive unfortunately and the simple figure cant be relied on. A better method is the FTSE trust funds which accumulate income and reinvest it, they'll give an all in one figure.
[blue is more real but deduct your rise in fuel is also fair imo]
Regarding currencies, for judging investment they are all unreliable also and recently we've done our best to devalue in line with others. So Japan, europe, UK and USA central banks deliberately act together for the reason you state; it would look bad for one alone
Its still a devaluation because the costs rise of buying real things0 -

In the same way the first skydiver to pull the cord shoots upward. It's all relative and they're all still hurtling towards the ground.
It's just a difference in terminology thing I suspect. Inflation in it's proper sense is the right term for increasingly worthless fiat currency?'We don't need to be smarter than the rest; we need to be more disciplined than the rest.' - WB0
