I went for the No regrets option. I withdrew my initial investment which has left me with a number of shares which will provide a basically free income. The Initial investment has been moved from the financial sector to the construction sector as there has been some great contracts won in recent weeks.

My father died a couple of years ago and had some shares, which I didn't know about. These were Northern Electric Preference shares.

There are only about 350 shares in total, but they are actually under two different accounts ... I think one lot was originally my mothers, who died before my father.

I contacted the registrar and in order to get them transferred to me, I'll have to pay about £70 ... not once, but once for each of the two accounts.

The shares are not worth very much ... perhaps only about £300, so paying out £140 seems a bit excessive.

Is this my only option ?

I know very little about stock market investing and would appreciate some help
I am looking to invest 120k in equities initially as a basis for a larger portfolio in the future
These initial stocks need to be safer large cap investments with a modest dividend return

Whats the best way to buy and hold these shares?

What tax is payable on the dividends?

If you invest through say a FTSE 100 Tracker fund do you get the benefit of dividends or do they just reflect any capital growth of the FTSE

I remember, in the days when I held unit trusts, I just rang the trust and told them to sell. They sent me a cheque.

Depends if you own it directly, I used to be with L&G and they deal whenever I phoned them. Cut off is middday every day and then you get the price released some hours later.

Or if you have it with a broker, ask them to sell
Poor performance is a bad reason to sell if they are just unpopular, is the market down or the management truly bad

if you own the shares even through a trust then you get whatever divs they pay, you are the owner

So the trust doesnt always pay divs in cash literally and they never pay it distinctly like shares would but collectively its the same.
Either they give some payout every year or they may accumulate which means they just give you more units of the trust to hold.

That might confuse because sometimes it means the price rises and your units stay the same but you did get paid. I prefer income so its obvious where the money goes but acc is better tax wise I think

Hope this is the right place to ask. Fortune Oil issued an RNS yesterday, the most interesting part being this:

"Subject to completion of the Fortune Gas Sale Agreement (as assigned and novated in the manner described above) and the Proposed Acquisition, the issuance of the new Ordinary Shares in connection with the Proposed Acquisition and the Loan Settlement and the passing of the Rule 9 Waiver resolution, the directors of the Company will recommend that the Company pay a special interim dividend of 2.36 pence per Ordinary Share to be paid to all shareholders of the Company (the "Special Dividend"). The Ordinary Shares to be issued in connection with the Proposed Acquisition and the Loan Settlement will not be entitled to the Special Dividend."

This is an 8p share, talking about a PROPOSED (important!) 2.36p special dividend. Am I missing anything here? Presumably there will still be some ex-dividend date for this, but won't announcing this tend to push up the price (which it already has) only for it to fall right back after the dividend?

FTO are only on my radar because a work colleague has them in his portfolio, bought at over 11p per share about three years ago or so. They've never really taken off, trading around 7-10p consistently, though the fundamentals seem good on paper.

So the share was around 7.5p two days ago, went up 1p yesterday and seems about steady today. Is a 1p rise on the possibility of a 2.36p gain about right, or do you think it might go up more in the short term? Oh, there's about a 3% spread, so that's a factor.

Want to stress, I'm not punting this share - it really has gone nowhere for 3-4 years and there's little to suggest that'll change. I'm more curious to know how more experienced hands think the psychology will work out.
