Share Dealing Discussion Area

Hi everyone,

I'm a returning member to MSE having joined 4-5 years ago. I spent much of my time on the debt free pages whilst paying off my small mountain. Looking back I asked quite a few silly questions along the way too, so I've registered with a fresh new username.

Anyway, I'll get to my question...

I'm looking to open a fairly basic share trading account. I've briefly compared a few and Selftrade and Hargreaves Lansdown both seem reasonable enough. Are there any clear advantages / disadvantage I may be missing?

The trade charges seem fairly level and neither are too painful for inactivity charges.

I don't know very much about ETF's and the like just yet so I would like a fairly simple account but one that isn't too restrictive either.

Hi, first post, hope it's in the right place.

I have shares in ASTRAZENECA and would like to sell some of them. Can anyone recommend a broker? I have the certificate but would prefer to sell for a flat fee, (change to electronically held), Equiniti wanted over £500 in commission.

Is there anything I should do or be aware of as I have never done this before.

I have a Hargreaves Lansdown Fund and share account with about £10,000 in assorted stocks. They are all dividend paying stocks and I have the dividends payed directly in to my cash ISA account. Am I in danger of breeching the tax code by doing this? Would I be better off with a Stocks and Shares ISA or some other way of managing shares?

There are 2 possible problems with what you are doing:
1) The dividends count towards your income and only basic rate tax has been paid on them. If you are close to the higher rate of tax then they might push you over.
2) You are limited in the amount you can put into a cash ISA each year. You need to be careful the total of the dividends and any other lump sums you add do not take you over that limit.

Another minor advantage of using a S&S ISAs is that you don't have to declare it on your tax return form if you are asked to fill one in, making it that much easier.

On the minus side you might have to pay to pay more to use a S&S ISA wrapper, though if you shop around there are some cheap ones out there particularly if you only invest in stocks listed in the UK.

Hi - unless I'm wrong, this is an inefficient way of doing it.

If the stocks are held outside an ISA, when you sell them you could be liable for capital gains tax if the amount is high enough. Second, the dividend payments are never really gonna be enough to justify putting them in a cash ISA - which is tax free (unless you're not really putting any other cash into it).

Personally, I would put all the shares into an S&S ISA, and keep the dividends in the same S&S ISA.

Bear in mind that the real benefit of long-term investing is the effect of compounding. That is, you really make your money by reinvesting all your profits as they come. If you've got £10000 of shares and you get £500 of dividends and you reinvest them, you've now got £10500 of shares, which will give you extra dividends.

So, if that was me, I'd put them all into an S&S ISA to protect them from tax in future, and when you get dividends, hold onto them until there's enough to buy more shares (if you get £50 dividend, that's not worth reinvesting into a share, cos H-L charge £11.95 per trade).

In fact, that *is* me. I've got a policy of saving £1000 a month, which I put into a mixture of tracker funds and ETFs, as well as some small cap investment trusts. At the moment, I've got £42 sitting in dividends, which came the other day.

When I get paid, I am going to buy £1042 of a particular ETF: that's me reinvesting my dividends. That £1042 will pay me ever so slightly more dividends than £1000 would've. And the whole lot is tax free.

Hi guys

Think I'm ready to dabble in this game now after running a couple of test portfolios for the last 12 months

I know this has been asked a number of times in mse, but not for some time, and previous replies may no longer be relevant

X-O, SVS, and TradersOwn: Any opinions? They're all similarly cheap for their fees (between £5.75 and £6 fixed cost per trade)

While SVS seem to have the initial advantage of 30 days worth of £1 trade fees, TradersOwn have their own forum (only accessible by members) and an iPad app if you're that way inclined (I'm an Android man myself, so if any have a nice Android app...)

Would appreciate your experiences, thx in advance
