My elderly father has asked me to check with you nice people whether any lots of his old, low value shares (he used to buy them almost on a whim) still might have any worth over and above curiosity level!
He holds certificates for the following:
Scoot.com
COE Group
XKO Group
Provalis
Minmet
I'm assuming these are all liquidated companies or the like but I would be grateful if anyone could shed light.0 -

I'm looking to open another dealing account (the aim being not to have all my eggs in my Barclays Stockbrokers basket).
Obviously, low costs would be good, as would a wide range of UK shares, and with that object I have pencilled in iDealing and X-O. But the other aspect, which probably saves far more money than a few quid off the commission, is how often they execute your buy or sell inside the quoted spread.
I have read that some are pretty poor in this area. Does anyone have any knowledge of the two I'm looking at, or indeed any better ones?0 -
xo will quote the price paid before you agree. For 15 secs you can decide, I dont think they are terrible.
If you deal very large amounts and spread really matters to you, a premium broker might be best. I believe selftrade argue they get very good spreads, depends which share
I deal small amounts, buy several times and get awful spread personally. The market itself will vary in its spread competitiveness, depends on time of day and many factors hence Im not fussed on brokers0 -
This year I want to use my ISA as my share playground. I had thought with a pot of only £11000 this may be too expensive but from the great stuff I have read above and visiting the links I get the feeling that X-O ISA could be a solution. No annual charge, low trade cost, and dividends handled. As sabretooth infers above I assume the trading is similar to hl if not identical.
I have been using HL outside ISA as a try out but that of course gives me problems with dividends (no capital gains issues as sadly I live within the allowance) and trading cost (about £35 in and out on a £2000 deal).
I'm assuming holding cash in such an ISA between deals is not in breach of ISA rules?????
Just thought I'd ask if I've missed anything better or missed any pot holes I might fall down.
My strategy will be £2000 lumps in UK companies. And I have no problems with in and out quick if profits are to be had, or riding it out if need be.

If new to shares I think the best deal is the smallest commission and regular buying.
Buying once can be pretty bad if it keeps going down, look at iii as well as they deal for 1.50 if you schedule it and this lets you buy 1 share 10 times if you want, to get an average price0 -

Tx sabre. Looked at iii but the simplicity of X-O attracts me. But I must study the detail before deciding
Do I need to be wary of this "It's even possible to hold cash in a self-select ISA, providing you intend to invest it at some point. The taxman doesn't have any set rules on how long you can leave money in cash so this provides a useful holding area while you decide where to invest."
If the market is tumbling I have no problem sitting it out.

You can use isa shares for saving cash, it just doesnt pay much usually. Of course what else can you do when selling, its only a problem if you wanted to hold foreign cash. That wouldnt be allowed, basically anything high risk is excluded from isa. However AIM companies can be bought if dual listed in Canada or elsewhere
XO is ok when Ive used them. Another approach is to buy a sector (not ftse ) and choose who is doing best vs price and why. Telegraph splits them by sector0
