  • Hi all

I have thought about buying some shares but literally have no idea what to do!

My ideal would be dealing only online and only in small random amounts once in a while.

I'm sure this has been discussed but this is a very long thread and don't fancy reading back to 2005!

    Any advice welcome.
    Thanks :)

  • See the post above yours, you dont have to buy all at once which makes it alot less likely you will make a big mistake. Even lower risk is regular investment in a unit or index fund so you arent relying on one companys performance.

Small amounts are basically pointless (under £2k per transaction) as stamp duty and commision will crush you. Maybe ETF's or funds can you better deals but you would need to shop around.

Interesting time in the markets at the moment. Shares look well overpriced if QE3 doesnt happen. But if it does then maybe they represent good value. I am going to buy into various ETF trackers if the ftse/s+p drops to 5k/1.1k

Oops I wasn't thinking anything like that!

    thanks for your help anyway!

Whilst I'm here, how is stamp duty calculated? I see that the site ii charges £1.50 per transaction if you do it on the certain dates.

Is stamp duty on top? If so how much?

    Thanks again

Yep, Stamp Duty is on top of the trade cost, usually 0.5% of the purchase value (excluding trading costs) on purchases only, nothing on sales.

Some shares don't attract stamp duty, not sure why nor how to tell which but I've had a few that were a slightly pleasant surprise when I got the figures to decide on whether to close a trade.

Duty is skipped where its listed on a main market elsewhere, I think only aim type smaller companies would qualify for this maybe

But quite a few are listed in Canada as well as here or Australia and sometimes that means no duty for LSE buys

Other reasons would be a share classed as ADR ETF or investment trust. The reason being these companies pay the tax for you, hence etf are popular with traders as it involves less overheads for them with quick buys.

BNC is the largest most common share not to pay duty, that is santander shares on the LSE but are actually listed in Spain in euros hence its very much a secondary listing

But shares with a main listing on the Irish market are charged at 1%.

Cheers, that explains it - the ones I had which attracted no duty were dual-listed on AIM and in Canada.
  • Good grief! I think I might just buy premium bonds...
