  • Market took a bit hit just before closing on Friday - any idea if its temporary ? :j
  • USA closed even further down by 9pm so no that is not likely. ECB member resigned in disgust, further instability sways market towards bonds to the extent they accept 1.9% return over 10 years.

Clearly prices are not correct with inflation about 5%, bond holders will suffer losses in future but right now stock holders good faith has left them poorer and looking foolish

Clearly prices are not correct with inflation about 5%, bond holders will suffer losses in future...

Remember that 5% is a historic figure whereas bond yields to an extent reflect expectations (and sometimes fearful ones...),

US inflation came in at 3.6% for July. August figure will be released on Thursday

    [Edit]

    UK inflation due on Tuesday

It is always different this time. The only thing that is the same is the outcome.

  • Aviva? Whats peoples views of them? Currently got a low price and have shown to always pay dividends. Im assuming their knock in price is due to the upcoming greece predicament.

-Just trying to give the thread some life!
  • Hi. Trying to get into shares, probably from TDwaterhouse (heard it's popular).
    To get some practise in, i did a fantasy trader and bought the following;

    Holding Name : 32Red
    Qty : 2517
    Mkt Price : 0.38
    Change Today : 0.00
    Qty Value : £930.53
    Profit ⁄ Loss : -69.22

There is a £11.95 commission charge and 0.5% stamp duty. After buying I couldn't work out why the loss was £69.22 until I was informed of "bid-ask spread"! (at 2p) I'm just really confused why no-one really mentions this when it takes a huge slice of the profits of any shares. Am i missing something here?
  • I've used this old example before but applies to the way you are thinking :-

The buy price of BP shares @16:30 today was 449.6 pence. So buying £200 worth would work out like this 42 shares x 449.6 pence which = £188.832 x (0.5% = £0.95) = £189.78 + £10.00 dealing charge iii = £199.78 to buy 42 shares. Divide 199.78 by 42 and each share stands @ £4.76 . When you sell the shares you would need to get £209.78 divide by 42 = £5.00 a share to break even because of the dealing charge to sell of £10.00 with iii. So each share would have to rise by 50 pence to get your money back, which is quite a big increase.
The more shares you buy the lower the dealing costs per share.

    :)

You can check roughly what the spread is before you deal. See the 'Bid' and 'Offer' prices here -

Unfortunately I think you will find the dip in Aviva price is to do with the shift in regulation for Insurance Providers. The government will be preventing Insurers from selling on your crash/claim data to lawyers to try and cut back on the claim culture. This will wipe at least 4% off the profits figures for any insurer.

Take a look at Admiral prices - they have bombed since the announcement

I have been investing in Aviva on the Halifax Share builder they do pay good dividends with the 2nd one coming up soon.Shares are for the long term so Aviva i will keep building up i'm sure the share price will increase over the next couple of years, keep on re investing the divi and that will decrease your break even point.Good info highhorse did not know that bit. The interim results were positive so i am expecting another good report in September. The share price should rise a little in run up to ex dividend date, before decreasing when paying dividends.
